It’s one of the few things he’s said which was bold and accurate. Disappointing but not surprising he didn’t have the courage or conviction to stand by his words.
This was obvious to anyone who actually pays attention to politics. If your line is largely that ‘Nigel Farage is right… but vote for us anyway,’ then people are just going to lean more towards Nigel Farage.
Of course, fundamentally this is what happens when you have a Labour leadership who don’t want to deal with the *actual* causes of our economic stagnation (growing inequality, the failures of privatisation and ‘the market’ to promote growth) because that might offend their wealthy donors, so they’re instead a lot more comfortable turning to scapegoats too.
It **is** becoming an island of strangers, but it is not because of the migrants, but because of the far-right. They are tearing our island apart. The British identity has always been multicultural, multiethnic, but they are causing so much damage and hostility that I start to not recognise the country I’m living in, and this is speaking as someone who lived through the Brexit debates.
I mean he was trying to appeal to people with no interest in voting Labour and put off some Labour voters in the process, just another Labour fumble.
Pandering to the far right isn’t a smart or winning strategy. They will never vote Labour and you just disgust your existing supporters.
