They tell you your Steuernummer (tax number). You should use this number if communicating with the tax office in addition to your TaxID (Steuer**identifikations**nummer).
See this number as their internal case number for you. It will change if you move in the area of another tax office. (Your TaxID always stays the same.)
They assigned you a tax number for your income tax and are asking you to provide it whenever you talk to them or transfer money to them, so they can identify you.
It is your Tax Number that you have to use in the future when contacting the tax office or filing returns
You got an id from your local Finanzamt. Use it whenever you contact them.
Also if you owe them money or get a tax refund they need your banking information IBAN.
If you owe them money they can get this money only if you fill out a form sheet you’ll have to download.
Otherwise you’ll have to transfer the money manually on time.
