    1. Now we’ll all need to don those Max Fosh tube-racing exoskeleton suits if we’re to get anywhere on time

32 hour week with seemingly no reduction in pay, they should’ve gone into a career in comedy.

One thing Kahn doesn’t manage well is the RMT: they tried this twice in 2024 and TFL caved both times, being warned that they’d always be coming back for more. Really the only solution for the public good is a long term strategy to automate as much of the tube as possible.

Honestly I don’t often support automation but it’s a job that is entirely fine to be automated

Many studies show that with increased productivity the aims of 5 day strikes can actually be achieved in 4. Now we just need the unions to catch up.

32 hour week? I’m sure the paying public will be fully behind this one.

8 lines include the Victoria, Jubilee, Central, District, and Northern use Automatic Train Operation (ATO) for speed, braking, and station stopping. However, they still require a driver to open/close doors and activate ATO.

      The DLR is fully automated.

Sitting for long hours is tiring, but TFL staff are well paid.

There needs to be a balance between recognising the costs of the job, as well as the perks, because the strikes happen way too regularly and seem self-serving rather than motivated by legitimate need.

Didn’t both Khan and Starmer promise no strikes under Labour?

    9. idek_just_for_fun on

Strikes are inconvenient but without strikes we would have no rights.

They are taking the piss but nowhere near the amount that employers do.

    10. UndergroundKev on

Why do people think the only people who work on the tube are drivers?

      The majority aren’t even striking!

Just for info, it’s not the drivers who’ll close the job down but signallers and control room staff. Automate all you like but without them nothing moves. Ever.

Now await for nonsense about AI or some such in 3…2…1….

Not sure what the complaints are about.

Workers with the power to strike and cause massive disruption are striking for more pay – and since Khan has demonstrated in the past that he has no backbone to stand up to them then they would be stupid not to demand as much as they can.

And frankly asking for a reduction in hours from 35 to 32, an increase on the 3.4% pay rise, and 75% off all rail travel everywhere in the UK for them and their partner – well that seems a bit unambitious, and I am sure that they could get a better deal than that if they asked for it.

Some of these guys earn over 100k per year for a role that’s screaming for more automation. I’m usually all for unions, but they can also really take the piss when in important spaces

Least I don’t get forced into the office this week

    14. Good working 5 days out of every 7 until/if you can retire at 70 is no way to live.

    15. Astriania on

This is the kind of thing that undermines support for trade unions in general.

These people are already well paid, have good conditions (how many people only have to work a 35 hour week already?) and are basically just using the leverage of being critical infrastructure without being critical enough to be banned from striking to blackmail the country into giving them ever more.

And don’t forget they already did this only two years ago. They’ll keep coming back until something is done – unfortunately that is likely to target unions in general.

Button pushers on trains. Mannequins in a station. Useless.

    17. Melanjoly on

In a few years they will be flummoxed when they are all replaced by automation and nobody stands up with them because they’ve repeatedly fucked us over.

    18. smokey380sfw on

If someone’s conditions and pay are better than yours, that means yours should be better, NOT theirs should be worse.

This is how the media, government and corporations divide us and stop us asking for more.

Don’t argue for less pay and worse conditions for others, go to your employer and tell that’s what you want.

It’s not noble to work long hours to just get by, it’s brain washing, value your time, your labour and skills.

    19. Infamous_Berry626 on

Get organised and you can get good terms and conditions too!

    20. all-aboard-conductor on

To everyone complaining about the 4 day week demands. It wasnt really long ago that a 6 day week was the norm. It was the unions that fought for the 2 day weekend and now you wouldnt dream of going to the office 6 days a week. Just because someone is first to demand a 4 day week with no pay reduction doesnt mean they should be vilified. If it can start the ball rolling it will come to everyone and become the norm

    21. JobAnxious2005 on

Time to bite the bullet and have automation as the only goal.

    22. EmuFeeling6081 on

Train staff should be classed as critical. In a city where we are being pushed to use public transport, people rely on it.

To get to hospital appointments, to get to work, that includes all key staff.

In the NHS, nurses have to fill the places before they can strike to atleast maintain a standard of service. I know the train services aren’t responsible for saving lifes, but the people riding them may be.
