In Izmir’s Balçova district, a 16-year-old high school student carried out an armed assault on the Salih İşgören Police Station using a pump-action shotgun.
According to reports, the suspect, identified as E.B., opened fire on the guard post, killing a police officer at the scene. First-Class Police Chief Inspector Muhsin Aydemir was also killed during the ensuing clash, along with Police Officer Hasan Akın. Police Officers Ömer Amilağ and Murat Dağlı were injured, one critically and the other lightly. One of the injured officers was taken to Dokuz Eylül University Hospital for treatment. A civilian passerby also sustained a minor injury to the hand during the gunfire.
The attacker was captured alive and taken under treatment at Alsancak State Hospital. Authorities confirmed that the suspect had no prior criminal record, and the weapon used in the assault belonged to his father, who had purchased it 10 years ago.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya offered condolences and confirmed that an investigation has been launched.
İzmir Governor Süleyman Elban, who inspected the scene, later announced that images and material found on the suspect’s phone indicated sympathies for ISIS and other extremist Islamist groups.
