      Proposal is crap.

But when I see lies used to fight it, I almost wish it passes.

Its actually much less damaging (one stupid law more or less) to our freedoms, than normalising lies as a method for achieving political goals.

Just look how “They are eating the dogs, they are eating the cats” crowd is doing accross the pond.

Also, there is less than 48 hours to give feedback on another mass surveillance law

      https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/14680-Impact-assessment-on-retention-of-data-by-service-providers-for-criminal-proceedings-/public-consultation_en

The [previous data retention law](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Retention_Directive) was declared illegal in 2014 by CJEU (EU’s highest court) for being mass surveillance and violating human rights.

Since most EU states refused to follow the court order and the EU commission refused to enforce it, [CJEU recently caved in to political pressure](https://www.laquadrature.net/en/2024/04/30/surveillance-and-hadopi-eu-court-buries-online-anonymity-a-little-further/) and changed their stance on mass surveillance, making it legal.

And that instantly spawned this data retention law that is more far fetching than the original, that was deemed illegal. [Here you can read the entire plan that EU is following](https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/document/download/1105a0ef-535c-44a7-a6d4-a8478fce1d29_en?filename=Recommendations%20of%20the%20HLG%20on%20Access%20to%20Data%20for%20Effective%20Law%20Enforcement_en.pdf). Briefly:

      >they want to sanction unlicensed messaging apps, hosting services and websites that don’t spy on users (and impose criminal penalties)

      >mandatory data retention, all your online activity must be tied to your identity

      >end of privacy friendly VPN’s and other services

      >cooperate with hardware manufacturers to ensure lawful access by design (backdoors for phones and computers)

      >prison for everybody who doesn’t comply

Spread the word: chat control is designed by persons who have no clue how cybersecurity works and what impact it has on it.

I sent the emails but I have very little faith in this being opposed.
The representatives in my country only care for themselves.

Does contacting MEP do anything? As I understand it, this is will be first voted on by representatives of countries governments, not MEPs. I’ve seen people from my country contacting MEPs, and they got back answer that it’s not being voted on in EP, and there isn’t final form of the proposal available.

I did, but one of the emails in bulgaria blocked the content

    7. Contacted French MEPs. I got only 1 email back, from David Cormand from Green/EFA, president of the delegation of Europe-Ecology and it was positive.

They oppose laws like this one, so that great.

Why is every post about this bullshit?

      Will vote to finalise?

They will vote on **wether or not** to finalise (pass) this legislation.
