Is the FFL prepared enough for actual war fighting? I’m genuinely curious. When was the last conflict they were engaged in actual combat?
FFL is only 9k or so troops.
France would prefer to keep them in pocket
Maybe it needs to be clarified, but the french foreign Legion is foreigners fighting for France, not French fighting in foreign wars.
So France isn’t sending them because it’s not sending its own forces.
FFL is mainly trained and equipped for interventions in Francophone Africa, against poorly equipped Islamists or military coups. Some also serve as peacekeepers in Lebanon.
Military units aren’t interchangeable. The FFL is a light-infantry force with little organic armor or artillery support. As much as I’d love to see how the peculiar French squad design (with ‘300m’ and ‘600m’ fire teams, and the world’s last knee mortars) would work in near peer conflict, the FFL without other French support units would just be more manpower that would need to be trained for the dispersed trench conflict under drone attack of the war.
Foreign Legionnaires aren’t French. Their officers *are*. A unit without officers is a mob.
And many in the FFL are originally from Russia. Poses no issues skirmishing with Islamists in Mali, where team cohesion is how everyone gets out alive. I’m not so certain how that would work in a situation where a legionnaire could walk 5 km to Russian lines, be hailed a hero, and have their criminal record expunged.
Because everyone is so scared of big bad ruzzia they piss their pants at the mere thought of fighting them.
You can see the wet poop response for repeated russian military attacks on Poland. If that was Iran, the factory that produces Shaheds was already in ruins. but with russia, NATO prefers to stay on their knees and beg for more.
I can’t imagine how this is not encouraging russians for more attacks.
AFAIK they are still part of the french army. They are just more expendable.
FFL are usually recon and commando type forces (when not patrolling) and not really meant to be used like this unless in combined forces with regular army.
they dont have air support or heavy tanks.
they have fast ground vehicles, multi role troop transports, and light armoured wheeled reconnaissance like the AMX 10 RCR or EBRC Jaguar that although fast are perhaps totally outmatched by the drone turn things have taken.
they do have a fair amount of combat experience but their focus has been on Africa and countering guerilla style warfare for …well years , decades now. not the same thing in eastern Europe against the bear.
Regarding the moral side, having the FFL wrecked would be as bad moral wise than any other French unit, it’s a high regarded unit in France.
Its not pmc. It is a regular army. Question is the same like why [place any nato country] didn’t sent their army
NATO?
All officers are mainly french…
