“Britain will not surrender its flag to those that wish to use it as a symbol of violence, fear and division, Sir Keir Starmer has said.”

That makes more sense now. I wonder what the reform uk members would say? “we can’t use our flag to show patriotism according to the prime minister” or some crap along these lines 🤦‍♂️

We now have a subsection of the populace who could be convinced the Prime Minister is shooting zoo animals to the moon in rockets with wads of Bank of England cash and they’d believe it. Disinformation warps the mind and makes zombies of the intellectually vulnerable.
      Thank Russia for this.

      The flag is an identifier.

If used in official capacity, flags are useful.

If used as an identifier among the people, it’s an identifier of ‘us’ and ‘them’ by definition.

Same applies in war — people look to WW2 imagery to show how we’ve always been proud of the flag — except ‘us’ vs ‘them’ is necessary in wartime, so it seems like a mark of pride.

It’s a mark that says nothing more than ‘we are the in-group’.

It should be adopted by the minorities to take away its association with the right. I know thats easy and safe for me (a WASP) to say, but its the only way to stop it being used as a weapon.

Edit 1: – had not realised wasp was not a well known acronym – i was using it as shorthand to position my self as “vanilla british” and someone who could easily display the flag without any fear in doing so.

Edit 2: someone else made the point about the ubiquitousness of the Welsh flag – its used everywhere and so not possible to be claimed by any one group – it represents the country and not a group within the country. This is the point I am trying to make…

The fact that this statement is classed as “breaking news” is a joke.

Maybe the nonce lover should just shush at this point. Less arrests than every other large gathering for its type and everyone is painted as far right hahahahahaha

Stamp out the fascists and people won’t associate the flag with fascists anymore.

If the fascists feel comfortable waving the flag, most normal people will associate the flag with fascism.

How dare he declare what they are using the flag for. They don’t get to decide when the flag is used for unity and when it’s used for division. He’s doing it again. Declaring half the country as far right legitimate targets again.

The flag is alright when it’s on bunting behind him, but if somebody he doesn’t like holds the flag then it’s a symbol of division and us vs them. It’s not how it works. It’s never how it’s worked.

Wise words from Keith who :-

Ignored the U.K. Govs vetting service advice and appointed ‘Mandy’ – Best Pals with a convicted
      Sex Trafficker and Pedophile.

Oh, and then repeatably lied about having any knowledge of the matter at PMQs

An unlikeable man in an untenable position!

Headline makes him sound moronic but the actual sentence makes sense and is a good sentiment.

      Classic journalism.

    14. > The prime minister said the flag represents “our diverse country”

      Unless you’re Welsh I guess.

    15. SuperSparSpartan on

Never understood why so many English people are so dramatic concerning their flag.

Every nation has its radical nationalists that shout and wave their countries flag like a monkey shouts and waves its dick in the jungle.

Do you think that stops the French from celebrating Bastille Day and throwing up some tricolour buntings? Does it fuck.

Either reclaim the flag, or fuck up gurning about it.

    16. BovrilBullets on

Every centre and left leaning politician needs to display British flags publicly and prominently in order to reclaim and de-politicise the flags.

This is such a miss from the supporters of Palestinian rights too. St George had connections to Palestine, should have been flying that one in tandem rather than letting the right coopt it.

Why is the entire country having a melt down over the flag, at this point i’ve lost the plot what the hell is going on.

This clown will try to say anything that he thinks his party wants to hear , he’s clinging onto to power by his fingernails and I’m sure the first chance his backbenchers get he’ll be out the door , the man’s a spineless moron who should never have been in charge

Need to post a lot of old pictures of the Union and English flags during WW2 with patriots fighting fascism.

    21. Simple_Joys on

Starmer should have been saying things like this weeks’ ago.

Local councils and civil buildings should have been flying the Union Flag (and the flag of their respective nation within the UK) for years and years.

Centre-left, centre-right, and centrist politicians should have been making the positive case for a kind of inclusive civic patriotism that most people in the country actually hold to.

Instead, the political centre *has* basically ceded the use of the flag to the far-right, aided and abated by far-left types who really are ashamed to be British. It will be difficult to swing the pendulum back on this, but it must be done.

    22. Obi-Scone on

If you want to display the English Flag and show that you aren’t part of Reform/National Front whatever just fly it with the Pride Progress flag. Simple.

    23. goonercaIIum on

So the violence was in sections where there was a failure to segregate the protestors from anti protestors. That seems like a failure from the police itself, if anything – though in fairness I doubt anyone expected > 100k to turn up let alone 150.

You just surrendered the direction of government and all media narratives instead, so they can inherit it naturally, dickhead

    25. Uniform764 on

I’m afraid surrendering the flag happened years ago Keir. Rightly or wrongly the English (outside of football tournaments) and British (outside of official functions) flags are seen as offensive and divisive by large parts of the left and seen as a two fingered salute to wokeness” by large parts of the right.

Overall the whole thing is just a bit sad and summarises the failings of this country in the last half century.

I do find it interesting that travelling in Europe I see various national flags flown without any controversy or issue but in the England (Scotland/Wales have plenty of national flags) I’m far more likely to see foreign flags than I am English ones.
