My brother wore a Mr T mask at Halloween when he was 8. We got it in Hector Grey’s.
He had gold tinsel from the Christmas decorations around his neck instead of gold chains.
I pity the fool.
Edit: I think there’s also a picture of him dressed up in a Native American feather headdress, with one of those bow and arrow sets with the suckers on the arrows. I often remind him that he can never be President.

Was black face ok in 2009? I remember a 1995 Paddies Day float in Ballyporeen. Two lads covered in shoe polish pretending to be Tyson & Holyfield…it seemed harmless at the time.

Incredibly unpopular opinion on here, but outside of the USA (which is to say divorced of the history of US slavery and minstrel shows) there’s nothing wrong with changing your skin colour as part of a costume.
If it wasn’t for US cultural imperialism, none of it would find it offensive unless the intent of the costume itself was to offend.
I bet Holly is looking forward to her return tomorrow!

The bar staff of a pub in my hometown dressed up as the Jackson 5 around the same time, complete with blackface. It raised an eyebrow but no more than that. I don’t think we can hold a student in 2009 to the standard we should rightfully hold a politician in 2025.

In fairness, it’d be a pretty shit costume if he hadn’t put on makeup.

I don’t really know him or his position but to drag up this kind of crap from his student days is BS. A non story and he’s come out quick with a statement to address it. Let it go.

I’m honestly impressed with the chill response to this here in the comments. Like this was something drunk Irish students used to do all the time with 0% derogation towards black people and usually because they thought black lads were cool from tv and movies. My friend dressed up as Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction one halloween for a fancy dress competition and won the fucking competition everyone liked it so much.

Maybe I’m naive but growing up in Ireland none of us would’ve thought twice about covering ourselves in brown make up or face paint if it was fancy dress… I’m thinking Mr T, Paul McGrath etc

I’m glad there’s not too many photos floating around of the stupid shit I did in college. Leave him off, the digital footprint thing is a bit tiring. Literally everyone has said and done stupid shit. If we don’t expect perfection from ourselves, our families or our friends why do we expect it from others?

Completely agree with the comments saying this is a non story and imported American rubbish.
And I hope people would keep the same energy regardless of who did it.
I feel a lot of people, from all sides of the political spectrum, would base their reaction off how much they liked or didn’t like the person in question and how many points they could score for their “side”.

That’s not going to help him, though.
