On September 14, 1990, in Lviv the monument to Lenin was dismantled. The Soviet authorities had erected it on January 20, 1952.

Historian and public figure Ivan Svarnyk, who witnessed the demolition:

“The mood among the people was very festive and determined. People understood that this monument was a symbol of that era, of that country in which they had lived for a long time –  that it marked the end of a chapter of history that had brought so much suffering and grief to many”.

The eyewitness recalls that after the demolition, when people came closer to examine the monument, they discovered fragments of cemetery gravestones in the foundation.

“For people, this was telling –  that the communists had built their grandeur and their glory on the bones of subjugated nations. It was very symbolic.” Svarnyk concluded.

The Lenin monument on the square in front of the Opera Theater had stood for 38 years.
