And to make it even worse the companies running these data centres will barely any pay any tax and the data centres will use a huge amount of water for cooling purposes too.

You REALLY don’t want them! And I’m saying that as someone VERY in the tech industry.
* They hire basically no-one.
* They take up loads of space.
* They are an eyesore.
* They make constant noise.
* Produce light pollution.
* They use up LOADS of your drinking water.
* They pollute ground water.
* They will be prioritized in a brownout over you.
* You will pay larger electric bills.
* They will be subed with taxes, but not contribute anything themselves.
* And now tonnes of C02
If you want progress in data and Ai, fund startups, research and education – not a data center owned by a non-brit corp billionaire.

I’ve been trying my best to move away from using their services to more local and environmental friendly options. For example I use ecosia as my search engine and I highly recommend it. https://www.ecosia.org/ other such alternatives can be found in r/buyfromeu

If it’s Essex, won’t it be from power mostly from Sizewell and wind turbines off the East Anglia coast though??

It wouldn’t be quite so bad if these datacentres were dumping their excess heat into community heating schemes that were heating places like leisure centres, hospitals, schools and maybe even homes. I couldn’t see anything in the article to suggest that was the case but if it isn’t then it should be part of the planning obligations.

They need to figure out an offset for it or close it. This is getting supid.0

1,500 tonnes of CO2 a *DAY*??
That’s more than 100,000 cars on the road per year equivalent
From *one* datacentre from *one* company
I’m glad I recycle my jam jars

Look up the SEZ’s and AI zones that they’ve put into place in the UK. They’re carving up Britain and selling it off to corporate governance and hardly anyone cares or even knows about it.

Interesting to see the opposition to data centers and AI in the uk and Europe. The tech industry is dominated by the USA because Europe can’t innovate and wants to regulate everything. Now they’re making the same mistakes with AI which USA and China will dominate

lol but hey lets tax drivers more, they actually pay.

That’s what just 200K ICE cars emit per year.
Convert 300K ICE cars to EVs and it’s offset.
Or replace one medium sized gas-powered electric generator with a cleaner tech.
Or plant 30M trees (hard)
Or convince 1M people to go vegetarian (harder)

More pointless AI to steal jobs. More pointless AI to enrich the few and disenfranchise the many. More pointless AI to steal humanity’s collective knowledge and art, then sell it back to you.
Go to hell.

I understand data centres are a new necessity, but there has to be a much more efficient way of doing it than this
