FPV drones are unmanned aerial vehicles that transmit live video from a camera mounted on the aircraft itself. They differ from other drones in speed, precision, and control characteristics: the pilot operates such a drone using special goggles (which provide the “first-person view,” or FPV) and a radio controller.

Because the drone transmits real-time video and the operator “sees” the terrain through the goggles, it’s as if they are “sitting” inside the UAV, similar to a pilot. These drones can fly at speeds exceeding 100 km/h. FPV drones vary in design and use: there are fixed-wing types (“planes”) and rotary-wing types. There are “kamikaze” models that fly one-way with a warhead, and there are “bombers” that have a drop mechanism. Such a drone approaches a target, drops a munition, and returns.

These drones are a relatively cheap and widely available way to influence the course of a battle. A drone costing around $600 can disable, and in many cases destroy, heavy equipment worth several million dollars. The popularity of FPV drones is simple to explain: the pilot is effectively steering the munition and can deliver a precise strike exactly where it’s needed.
