Just think Americans, if you had done this in 2020 then your country wouldn’t be in such a mess.

I suggest a new shorthand for the following:

“Anti-Democratic figure, quite likely a Criminal, is held responsible by the Democracy they tried to Destroy” -> To be Bolsonaro’d.

Prosecutors state that one very dubious guy (former Legion Etrangere, involved in the recruitment of Romanian military personnel as mercenaries), who offered to Georgescu his voluntary (security?) services, plotted with a bunch of guys (around 21 people) to incite to violent protests in Bucharest the next day after the annulment of the presidential elections (virtually won by Georgescu), having in mind to overthrow the Government. This happened, allegedly, with the geenlighting of Georgescu, thus the accusation of complicity against him, yet not instigation, interestingly enough. This means he was not the initiator of the alleged coup. These guys were arrested by the police on the same day the plot took place (December 7th), in their way to Bucharest. All or some of them, it is not clear to me (their leader for sure), were released by the the police and fled the country (why the release? the judges dismissed the accusations in consideration of the evidence presented in court). The money, gold bars and the grenades were discovered much later, in July, at the home of the mercenary contractor (pretty unsurprising), not during the initial operation, as this article seems to imply. This is what I know, judge for yourselves. The justice system is currently protesting against the austerity government installed after the annulment of the presidential elections, so it will take a while.

Quick correction: at least according to Digi24, a romanian news outlet says that according to their sources Calin Georgescu is an author of the coup, not an accomplice. He is considered a “moral accomplice” to the acts that his mercenaries did. Just for this, I hope that justice is served. If it will be, he’s looking at at least 25 years of prison.

Former presidential candidate **Călin Georgescu** was sent to trial on charges of complicity in an attempted coup, alongside alleged paramilitary leader Horațiu Potra and 20 other people, [Biziday.ro](https://www.biziday.ro/331956-2/) reported. He also allegedly benefited from hybrid warfare operations coordinated by Russia during the country’s 2024 presidential election crisis.

Romania’s presidential election [was annulled last December](https://www.romania-insider.com/ccr-annuls-presidential-elections-romania-december-2024) after declassified reports alleged Russian involvement in cyber activities aimed at undermining the integrity of the electoral process.

Prosecutor general Alex Florența told reporters on Tuesday, September 16, that Georgescu was “the beneficiary of Russia’s hybrid war actions,” which included cyberattacks on key institutions, disinformation campaigns, and aggressive promotion on social media, much of it generated with artificial intelligence.

According to prosecutors, Horațiu Potra’s group of mercenaries had planned to incite unrest and overthrow the government after the 2024 presidential election was canceled. The [attempt was stopped at an early stage](https://www.romania-insider.com/romanian-mercenary-judicial-control-protests-canceled-elections-2024), with authorities arresting members before they reached Bucharest. During raids, police reportedly discovered USD 3.3 million in cash, 25 kilograms of gold bars, 50 grenades, pistols, and ammunition. Potra remains at large.

Cǎlin Georgescu has denied involvement in Horațiu Potra’s alleged plot but admitted he visited a farm in Ciolpani where his team met with Potra.

Initially charged with instigation, prosecutors last month [reclassified Georgescu’s case to complicity](https://www.romania-insider.com/prosecutors-reclassify-calin-georgescu-attempted-coup-romania-2025), suggesting he may have been used by Potra’s network rather than directly leading it.

According to the official [announcement](https://mpublic.ro/content/c_16-09-2025-12-09) from the General Prosecutor’s Office, the case will be tried at the Bucharest Court of Appeal.

The former candidate [is also facing trial in a separate case](https://www.romania-insider.com/calin-georgescu-sent-trial-july-2025) for promoting fascist ideology and pro-legionary propaganda, accusations that prosecutors say include the glorification of Marshal Ion Antonescu and ultranationalist populism. He remains under judicial control while awaiting trial.

The far-right, Russia-friendly candidate surprisingly emerged as the first-round winner of the 2024 presidential elections. He submitted his candidacy for the repeat elections of May 2025 but [was barred from running again](https://www.romania-insider.com/calin-georgescu-barred-presidential-elections-ccr-romania-march-2025).

In May, Georgescu [announced that he is stepping away from active political life](https://www.romania-insider.com/calin-georgescu-retires-politics-romania-may-2025) to focus on his family.
