Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said he does not believe in the effectiveness of any guarantees for Ukraine and proposed abandoning this term.

He made this statement during his speech at the annual Yalta European Strategy meeting in Kyiv, according to a correspondent for European Truth.

Sikorski said that, in his opinion, Ukraine “already has guarantees, even if they are called ‘assurances’ in the Budapest Memorandum.” He is convinced that if other, more specific guarantees are provided, they will not work.

The minister recalled that the purpose of the security guarantees for Ukraine under discussion is to deter Russia from new aggression: “That is, if you attack someone who has been given guarantees (i.e., Ukraine – EP), we will start a war to defend them.”

“In other words, if we provide security guarantees to Ukraine, we are saying that we can start a war against Russia. And I don’t think it’s convincing that there is trust in this. Anyone who wants to fight Russia can start right now. But I don’t see anyone willing to do so,“ he shared his thoughts. ”But in international relations, there is nothing worse than giving guarantees that no one trusts.”

Sikorski called for recognition that this is not about guarantees for Ukraine.

“We are not talking about guarantees, but about monitoring peace and strengthening Ukraine,” he stressed.

    2. National governments are less likely to send their troops to fight in a foreign land. This is why we need an EU army that doesn’t answer to respective countries but is bound by protecting EU interests collectively instead.

He’s not wrong, but he should provide his own solution, too. I agree that security guarantees from the West sound like a hollow promise, but we need to hear thoughts on what would work.

He is half right. Guarantees are indeed not enough, we need them in the NATO alliance. For their security and our security. Right now, the fighting strength of Ukraine is crudely put about 10 Polands. Someone who can generate ten Polands of fighting strength should not be our protectorate but our Alliance partner.

But till we can get to a place where that can be made a reality he is also right we should just focus on strengthening Ukraine, all this talk of peace is Useless unless Putin can be forced to the negotiating table afraid for his life and the future of Russia.

Edit; if not NATO, than what ever alliance we can make that includes them.

The man casually calls Europe out. He knows that the solution is to have a sovereign and strong Ukraine, and that any troops they send will be killed by Putin.

    6. If Ukraine doesn’t get actual security guarantees, then it might as well join Russia right now and stop the bloodshed.

    7. >Earlier, the Polish government repeatedly stated that it would not send troops to Ukraine even after peace was established.

It’s their right, but they shouldn’t try to undermine the countries that are willing to send troops to Ukraine.

Of course no one wants to fight Russia.

The question is, how can we prevent Russia from attacking us?

Allowing them to conquer Ukraine doesn’t seem to be a way to achieve this, because Russia would just continue its wars of conquest, that already go on for over two decades, and attack the next country and then the next, until Russia will ultimately clash directly with NATO.

Thats the deal. Russia cannot fight us.

Neither of us want to fight.

But one of us have the ability to fight, while the other does not really have much to fight with.

Russia struggle with Ukraine. They would be blown out of the water by actually developed strong economies.

Just tell me how is Russians making parts for military equipment on lathes ever compete with our CNC machines etc?

One person in my country produces as goods/value as 8 Russians.
Considering Russia is 144million people, and have that low productivity.
      They cannot compete at all.

He is not wrong. I mean mo offence, but from my personal point if view, considering lack of proper reaction on situation with drones in Poland, it would be better both for Ukraine and EU to just get guarantees in weapon contracts developed in Ukraine. From one side, we can make cheap and efficient weapons for you, from the other side Ukraine won’t need to rely on illusion of collective defence and illusion of defensive alliance. This is my opinion only, though.

We know what security guaranties work – nuclear weapons.

That doesn’t mean Russia doesn’t want to fight you…gawd, why are people so blind?

    13. JackhusChanhus on

Fair enough, pretty sure Ukraine would take a few million more shells over a vague idea of how to police their border after the war

Just the name of that thing : “coalition of the willing”.

Wtf does that even mean ? Is that the name of a child’s book ? Like : “the little coalition who was willing (but couldn’t)” ?

Who’s stopping you little coalition ?

At some point it will be, Either we fight or we die. Pick your poison.

It is concerning we have these kind of limp dicks in power.

    16. Best security guarantee for Ukraine is a strong defence, a powerful Ukrainian army. Now the Ukrainian army is the best prepared European army, for the nowadays warfare. Ukraine army became the spinal cord of the future European army. We need Ukrainians today more and more. They produce 60% of their weapons, and keeping the rythm they will advance further.

Finally, a European politician of note said what had to be said. Stop with the false hopes and do more of what can actually be done.

We are already fighting Russia, we just haven’t accepted it yet. You can’t decide who you fight if the other side is already fighting you.
