As always: Distracting from internal problems by yelling at Germany.

Good done, that was 80 years ago and the state that commited no longer exists.

    3. I understand why we demand reparations, as there’s a historical and moral case for us. But at the same time, I can’t ignore that the president’s push for reparations isn’t really about justice. He’s just weaponizing history to inflame domestic tensions and send a symbolic message to the PiS electorate: “look, we’re sticking it to the Germans.” It’s less about genuine reparations and more about political theater.

And how much money does the Polish president want from the Germans?

    5. Stannis44 on

They should give up more land to Poland it’s the only way to settle the issue 😂

Ridiculous, Germany owes reparations to Poland, just as america does to african-americans, canada does to natives, and the UK does to pretty much every country that was part of the british empire.

    7. Its strange that they never demand reparations from Russia…..?

Poland and the Soviet Union waived further payments in 1953 and confirmed that no further demands would be made. This was confirmed several times afterward. Apart from that, Poland received sufficient support from the major net contributors to the EU, especially Germany. Poland should be satisfied with that. There will certainly not be a single additional cent from Germany in the form of unjustified reparations.

The year is 2125. World is commemorating 20 years since the end of World War 4.
In other news, Germany yet again rejects WWII reparations bill from Poland.

To the people wondering what the fuck is this about, let me explain. This is eastern negotiation strategy. You make absurd demands to recieve something smaller but tangible in the process of haggling. Sadly, Germany does not understands the game. Probably he wants something about EU, like the annulment of immigrant readmission act, maybe something about green energy, CO2 limits, MERCOSUR trade, or maybe discount on military purchase or more aggresive stance towards Russia. Who knows? There are many subjects inside EU and in Ukraine invasion that Poland and Germany are not seeing eye to eye.

€1.5 trillion – In return Poland can give East Prussia (southern part), Silesia (Lower and Upper Silesia), Pomerania (Farther and parts of Western Pomerania) this included areas such as Szczecin (formerly Stettin), Neumark (part of Brandenburg east of the Oder), Lusatia (eastern parts) and some eastern areas of Lusatia back to Germany.

Jeez man, get over it and move on with your life mr “president” ffs!

    13. As a German, I just read through the history and the only one Poland should be angry at is Russia… It’s so obvious it hurts. There was a contract and a plan made after war where the Soviet Union was supposed to distribute payment to Poland. You can’t start half a decade later with trying to get more money with a new contract. That’s not how this works.

You don’t buy a car and years later demand a discount.

I can see why Poland would want something maybe 10 or 20 years after but *80?* It’s been 80 years! Get over it bud

Did they not get reperations by taking Silesia, Pomerania and East Prussia?

      Extremely rich industrial regions

The push for reparations is a nationalist-populist tactic by the Polish government (the president) to divert attention from internal problems.

Reparation claims have been rejected by Poland on multiple occasions. Whether this was done by the Peoples Republic of Poland or the Republic of Poland is irrelevant (just as Germany is the successor to the Third Reich, the Republic of Poland is also responsible for the actions of the Peoples Republic of Poland).

I do not agree that our state should have to pay another state (which has repeatedly rejected reparations) 80 years later. Paland had many chances to (legitimetly) demand such reperations. They homever didnt.

Furthermore, this proposal is not at all realistic. The German government would lack any internal support (from the population) for it. Such proposals just weaken our cooperation with poland, without solving any of the problems our countries face.

why is pis always trying to piss off germany? I mean sure for internal gains and more voters, but is this not a little bit short lived. russia and belarus are right at the border and doing Military exercise, you would think thats a good time to not piss of your allies!? Regardless of this we should support Poland and all our eastern allies and give them every support they ask for – recent events just show that we need to do more, i was very happy that poland shoot down these russian drones invading their territory, i hope we in germany find the courage to do the same here.

Poland did receive some reparations via the USSR under the 1945 Polish-Soviet Reparation Treaty, but it was controlled by the Soviets, limited, and ended in 1953 under coercion- Poland had no real sovereign choice. The 1953 renunciation wasn’t voluntary in a modern sense, and later treaties focused on borders, not reparations.

Poland suffered massive losses: 17% of its population, most major cities destroyed, huge economic and cultural devastation – far beyond what was delivered. Even if further reparations are unlikely, the history shouldn’t be cheapened. Deliveries happened, yes, but framing it as “Poland got what it was owed” ignores coercion, scale of loss, and moral responsibility.

I have a real disdain for this President, but he is a historian and he highlights a genuine sentiment of hurt that people are all too happy to gloss over because ‘boooo boring, poland at it again’.

For people with open minds: the material losses covered were maybe at around 5% the total material and economic damage, that it either arrived late, was stripped down or was controlled by Soviets. Even that fraction wasn’t delivered in a timely manner to help Poland at a time it mattered most to recover.

Actual losses: conservative estimate is around $50-100 billion in 1945 value, or roughly $1 trillion in today’s $$$

Jesus, I’m really bothered by how my fellow countrymen are such cunts (I’m Polish)…
Why do you feel the need to say sorry to Germans and explain yourself? Yeah, I don’t like PiS either, I know this is a political game for them to some extent. But our German colleagues here seem to totally forget that their country (because Nazis were Germans) is responsible for one of the biggest genocides in history, destroing our country, nearly flattening the capital… We are talking about milions of people tortured and killed, generational traumas, the fact that Poland holds the biggest concentration camps, even though we haven’t built them, and is being associated with them.
Please, grow a pair and shut your mouth. Germans should learn their lessons. Making deals with Russia over Eastern Europe and allowing uncontrolled immigration was a sign that they haven’t though…
