esa’s reusable rocket demonstrator Themis is standing tall.

Themis will demonstrate rocket stage recovery and reuse technologies and the first model arrived at Esrange Space Center launch pad in Sweden 🇸🇪 over the summer.

T1H is 30 m tall standing on its legs and 3.5 m wide, holding the necessary technologies for the low-altitude take-off and landing tests it is set to perform.

      It’s cave man tech
Oh Europe, you could have been much better than that

Country in europe, Lithuania developed space tech so advanced that it’s not even in comparison

Looks like progress isbeing made at Esrange Space Center.

Airbus is an example of European dominance in Airplane manufacturing.

It’s about time we get dominant in rockets too!

Finally! Now make a reusable European rocket successful!! We need an alternative to SpaceX, which CEO is a fanatic Nazi. Europe first and secure!

I, for one, would love for Europe to never, ever give Space X any money.

Of course this project is way too slow and late, but I’m glad at least progress is being made.

The most interesting thing is that it’s powered by 1 to 3 Prometheus engines, a 1.2kN reusable liquid methane engine. This would be for a small (500 to 1500kg class) reusable launcher (Maia).

There is also a bigger system independently in development, Callisto (Ariane Next), with 7 to 9 Prometheus engines in the first stage and 1 Prometheus upper stage.

Neat! Shall there be a stream about testing or launch or something?

    9. When are the test flights due to happen? I’m assuming “really soon” because you don’t want that thing just sitting there on the pad for no reason. Not long until the first snow…

Don’t get me wrong, this is awesome and a great achieved milestone. But if also feels we are soooo late to the party compared to the US and China, and nobody is accountable.

    11. I would just add, that it is likely that it will fail. This does not mean that ESA is useless, but a part of the design process.

    12. Before anyone gets too excited, this is just a testbed for vertical landings and not a prototype of a real launcher.

I remember like in 2005. Ariane Espace CEO (usual French moron that studied history and “higher administration”) was arrogantly telling reporters that Ariane management aren’t dumb and that they would have longed build reusable rockets if it was worth it.

He was coldly saying that “reusable flight is physically impossible” and that Elon was an electrical engineering dropout and could possibly have missed that. And he added the usual moronic comment “Americans have tried it before with the space shuttle and every one knows Ariane is 10x cheaper”.

That Ariane CEO then recently quietly resigned to continue a career in management consulting.

Thanks to French inability of finding competent leaders, Ariane lost 15 years and will probably never recover from the 100s of mistakes they made (they will still survive though, eating up an even greater proportion of France military budget every year …)

Hope they can be more than just a SpaceX copy, Europe needs to step into the space age too because we are really lagging behind
