It took a long time but it seems like the EU is finally catching up in digitalisation. The wallet and digital euro will be a big step forward.

Yes! Fucking finally. Though it’s a bit sad, that this idea had to be originally raised by group of European companies. EU ministers don’t really seem to care about economy, as they themselves seem to only propose some stupid socialist bullshit, like subsidies or ai act.

It’s the EU version of censorship when they will debank people for selling NSFW art or games, of even games in general, for posting valid criticism, etc. Just the stuf Visa and Mastercard have a duopoly over, EU will do the same.
Can we have a little bit of freedom, as a treat? I wanna be able to spend my nonexistent money however I want, and if it includes buying video games with sex scenes, boobs and cursing I’d like to be able to do that.
Of this actually results in a good and viable alternative to visa and mastercard it would be amazing. Those two companies are far too powerful and influential

Privacy is the biggest concern about it. Government has direct unequivocal access to all your transactions.
They can collect your spending data en masse, and feed it to AI models. With conventional credit cards, its very difficult to do so (not impossible though).
Also CBDC “is pegged”, but value can be changed through code for you, for a group of people or for everyone.
Third thing is that its centralized. You dont “own” it, like you would crypto, since you just get a “note” that you have x euros, you dont have actual euros.
CBDCs include “programmable money” features for example, restricting what it can be spent on, setting expiration dates, or freezing accounts for compliance reasons.
This means they can be deleted at will, since you are not the owner.
