Astonishing performance. Unbelievably impressive championship for Cian; overshadowed a bit by English’s recent resurgence this year but he’s arrived now. Get everything behind him.
Irish Athletics goes from strength to strength with young young stars at the forefront. Exciting times.

Insane race – what a fucking kick to come fourth after being at the back for the entire race.
This is really worth a watch – so excited for his future too.

2 Sb and a WCR in the top 3

Crazy race like seemed like he was way out of contention coming into the last stretch but some finish from him. Difference of just 0.2 seconds from a medal, looking forward to see what he does in future

Absolutely brilliant. He’s a smart fella and will have learned a lot from how to approach championships and how to run races at this level.
You could see in his interview after the semifinal that he’d already learned to put into practice what he’d learned about recovery between big races and you could see that in his condition in the final.
I think what he’ll take from the final is that he has the finishing speed and strength endurance to be able to finish faster than some of these top athletes but he’ll have to improve his midrace positioning, pacing and stamina to be able to put himself in a position with 150 to go where he can realistically use that finishing pace and strength endurance to his advantage and get amongst the medals.
All that’s to come though and I’m absolutely convinced (barring injuries of course) that he’s here to stay at this level. This isn’t flash in the pan stuff. Absolute future world level medal winner guaranteed. Phenomenal stuff. He should be so proud of himself.

Another 10 or 20 yards and he’d have overtaken the bronze medallist. What a finish!

As a male in his 30s who has always grown up around playing and watching sport I found the past 2 weeks wonderful watching all the Irish athletes in the boxing and the athletics but in particularly the male athletes.
I’m in absolute awe seeing such a high number of Irish male athlete’s competing and seeing the likes of Cian McPhillips setting a new national record and *the next thing some other lad does soon hopefully so I can complete my wind up post*! They make me so proud to be Irish! They are the such incredible role model’s especially to young boys and its these type of males we should be looking up to and not “online influencers” and “content creators”.

I believe he’s the fastest European right now currently. Only 23.
