For centuries, Ukrainian embroidery has been one of the nation’s most recognised symbols, with the traditional vyshyvanka shirt becoming synonymous with Ukrainian identity.

In this post, we explore the origins and aesthetic roots of the vyshyvanka and trace how this iconic garment came to captivate the world over time.

As a child in the 80s I had an English language children’s book called “How a shirt grew in a field.”.

It’s a simple story about a boy watching his parents as they take all the steps from planting flax to spinning the thread etc. to make a new shirt. It didn’t say anything about Ukraine except that the boy was called Vasya and also wore an embroidered shirt.

The first time I saw something about Ukrainian vyshyvanka I immediately remembered the book and realised that it had been about Ukrainian traditions. It’s strange to think that the book might have been illegal in the soviet union at the same time that I was reading it as a boy.
