Countries that have already recognized palestine know that it doesn’t achieve anything. It isn’t designed to achieve anything. And that’s not really the questions to be asking.
The questions to be asking include:
What does it help prevent?
What is the signal it provides?
And now that recognition is out of the way, what is the next step in ratcheting up pressure on Israel.

The article states that
1. The recognition of Palestine’s independence allows other states to use more significant mechanisms to influence Israel than when Palestine had an uncertain status.
2. It makes it impossible for Israel to annex all the territories of Palestine that it captured after 1967 (de jure – as an internationally recognized territory)

It won’t stop them at all – if anything, Israel will ramp it up, and in the meantime we have shown we support terrorist violence with all the consequences we’ll have to face in our own countries.

It makes it clear that Israel no longer can veto decisions by western countries. No matter how much he tries to shame or blackmail them. It’s kind of a big step when you think about just how much influence some extremists in Israel has had over the worlds most powerful democracy. And how that democracy has misused its power to push other countries.

The main real-world achievement is that, for better or for worse, it will anger the USA. How they respond is anyone’s guess, but it’s probably either tariffs or sanctions. That seems to be the response to everything these days.
The US military is tied in with Israel too much to the point that support for Israel is one of the topics left that keeps the 2 parties in the USA united. They’d probably drop most other allies to protect Israel, because Israel is a key player in the USA’s hard power.

It means that Israel can no longer rely on European states for its survival. Never again has become meaningless.
We will most likely see an Palestine state before we recognize Taiwan, Most likely we will even drop Taiwan completely in the end

Palestine is not an independent state. I’m not saying it shouldn’t be one.
But rhat is the actual situation, the OLP is now dependent on Israel.
There are two separate and rival governments in Palestine.
There are Israeli settlements inside the Palestinian territory , that is not something that an independent state would permit.
An independent state by definition controls their territory. The OLP has limited control of parts of Cisjordanie. Hamas used to control Gaza but Gaza is now effectively a bunch of ruins in a state of semi-anarchy or occupied by Israel.
With all the goodwill of the world they aren’t an independent state.
An independent state has by definition:
– An independent government
– control and monopoly of violence over a territory
– relationships with other governments.
Saying that Palestine has that is a stretch

It’s all internal politics. Macron wishes he at least gains support from Muslims, when everybody hates him.
Current Spanish government is pretty corrupt (from what I heard), so it’s a good distraction.

What does not recognising Palestine do?
tradeit2day on
Achieves nothing in reality.
Lets not pretend this is the first time someone recognizes palestine as a country. Its just a signal politicians send to satisfy voters in their own countries. Countries with a high level of muslim immigrants.
Tomorrow its business as usual.
For what is worth, Hamas loves it, they are all over arabic television channels claiming victory and justification for 7 oct.

Unless there is a formal recognition of Israel by the Arab countries and the new state of Palestine at the same time, all this is going to achieve is make Europeans feel better for themselves once more.

It is an easy decision that doesn’t require other actions from politicians, while seeming like they are doing something. It is of little consequence if the country has no deals with Israel that could be cancelled disadvantageously.

Nothing. They’re gonna be wiped off the map and all will be forgotten in 10-20 years. There will be outrage and boycotts but that won’t last. Eventually, one by one, those outraged countries will forget.
That’s how the world usually works anyways.

Palestinians did no favour to themselves by electing Hamas as leaders.
There aren’t moderates in power at either sides, to make peaceful coexistence an option.
Terrible as it may be, if Palestinian and Israeli haven’t found a way to coexist in seventy years, it’s increasingly likely this only ends with one side wiping out the other…

I was actually on the fence about supporting Israel, but seeing the outpouring of support that Palestine receives from countries like Spain, despite having nothing to do with Europe, actually makes me pro-Israel. I hate the far-left so much.

It’s useless outside some mor egotistical pressures which can be applied. Israel would face a harder time if everyone snatcions them for occupying sovereign land. It’s more symbolic since if an active genocide doenst get people to sanction Israel what else will?

Restoration of Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria?
Ikcenhonorem on
Factually that changes nothing. In 2011, the State of Palestine was admitted into UNESCO. In 2012, it was accepted as an observer state of the UN General Assembly. So for most of the world Palestine is already a state.

With the USA and Israel aligned, it looks increasingly likely Palestinians will be moved to other territories because Gaza is becoming unlivable. [Have a gander at the incredible GREAT Trust, USA/Israel plan for Gaza (Palestinian not included).](https://www.washingtonpost.com/documents/f86dd56a-de7f-4943-af4a-84819111b727.pdf?itid=lk_inline_manual_4)
