It’s in old poetic style. I’ll give it a shot, but it’s 3 in the morning and I’m not that good at this kind of style.
“He who laments their troubles aloud
is a prisoner of their troubles
No justice is to be had in this land
For those who do not seek it for themselves”
It basically means at least to me “shut up about your troubles and do something about them”
“Whoever laments his troubles is a prisoner of them. One does not get justice in this land unless one secures it for oneself!”
Context and Authorship
These lines come from Aleksis Kivi (1834–1872), often called Finland’s national author, best known for the novel Seitsemän veljestä (Seven Brothers), published in 1870.
The quotation is from that novel, where one of the brothers expresses this idea of self-reliance and the need to fight for justice rather than expect it passively.
It reflects Kivi’s mix of moral teaching and sharp observation about Finnish society.
The orthography you see (“waiwojansa” instead of “vaivojansa,” “waikertaa” instead of “vaikertaa”) reflects 19th-century spelling, which was still shifting toward the modern system.
