might be a good idea to offer US salaries first before inviting them

Right – so they can completely upend their life only to be deported by reform in 4 years?

Let’s face it – The UK is headed in a much darker direction than the U.S. currently is in.

And the pay here in the UK is… Half what they’d earn in the USA? Less than half?

That’s fine but we need to be competitive with salaries, quality of life, etc.

Given our universities and some NHS trusts are in the news cycle of financial struggle and struggling to afford research (which is what a lot of people enter academia for anyway), I don’t think this is as realistic as some think.

Which is a shame for a country that has a rich history in research, discovery and invention

To be fair, we have the best chance of tempting them simply because we speak English. All the EU countries are trying to get American scientists to come and work there, but if there’s no chance for their husbands and wives to find work and their kids to fit in at school, it’s not going to be a good solution. France and Germany are always trying to recruit American scientists, but their societies are not particularly well adapted to English speakers. That gives the UK a huge advantage.

Honestly I think this is a good idea. We should be pushing the Uk as a scientific powerhouse, we have the infrastructure at Cambridge, we can start to really build ourselves and show that the Uk is a great place to invest.

It’s not like they’ll come in their droves. But the premise is that they want to leave, so we aren’t really competing against the USA, we’re competing against the rest of the developed world. We don’t need to compete with US salaries, but French and Australian.

Why would anyone move to the UK if they have other options? In four years this country is going to be plunged into fascism and will become an appalling place to live, especially for “foreigners”.
