Because last time people voted Liberal Democrat they got fourteen years of Tory austerity as a reward?

Edit: honestly baffled that some people think this is a controversial response to the question. The Lib Dems tried to sell themselves as a moderately progressive alternative to the political status quo fifteen years ago, just as they are now. They then went into a coalition with the Tories. It’s not that long ago – *of course* lots of people are still pissed off about it!

    2. ottoandinga88 on

Their u-turns on tuition fees and supporting tory austerity during their 2010 coalition government, obviously. If they want to earn trust back they need to get rid of people like Davey who deny to this day that there was anything wrong with UK’s governance during 2010-2015

    3. XenorVernix on

The Lib Dems don’t really offer anything that Labour and Tories don’t already. People want change.

    4. Poop_Scissors on

Because there are already three other shite neoliberal parties to choose from.

    5. Tobemenwithven on

He has 4 years to solve. And keeping a leader for a while will help as they have swapped Tim and whoever the woman was a while back for little gain. At least Clegg and Ashdown were well known.

They also have 72 seats, thats more than the SNP, Reform, Greens and Independents combined. Hardly a shit starting point.

What will really be interesting is who is “seen” as the best to get rid of Farage. If Starmer continues to slide, and the Tories, well theyre fucked either way continue. Its between them and the Greens. And my money is most people think the greens are more mental than the Lib Dems.

Bit of a dark horse here if cards land right.

Remember a 5 way FPTP election has never happened before, were in uncharted territory. We could unironically see seats won on 20% or less of the overall vote.

If people decide getting Farage out is a priority and cannot bring themselves to go for LAB/CON who else can they turn to? Unless they want to swing all the way out to a party that is extreme on the left.

Because I literally have no idea who they are, what they stand for, what their policies are on the key issues. The only thing I know is that their leader likes to do publicity stunts and make a twat of himself.

If they want to get my attention as a cynical busy working man they need to present themselves seriously and spell out in simple terms their stances on key issues and it needs to be different and viable compared to what’s being offered by the major parties.

      *edited for spelling*

    7. LopsidedLegs on

I do, but in local elections are they are more popular than Labour, and are more likely to keep the Tories out.

    8. hungoverseal on

That’s actually quite interesting polling. Would be fascinating seeing the breakdown compared to other parties, if they’re unique in terms of “Don’t know enough about them” being the top issue then they really have a point about the BBC.

    9. I can only speak for my local area. The Lib Dems do a great job. We get a quarterly Newsletter setting out what they’ve been doing. The local Councillor is really active on Social Media and really does get back to you if you message him. The Tories and Labour are only seen at Election time

    10. tykeoldboy on

As a former Lib Dem voter I was let down by their spinless attempt at government in 2010. At least in 1974 they (The Liberals) had the guts to walk away when it wasn’t working for them.

    11. ShondaVanda on

Students haven’t forgotten what voting Lib Dem got them.

    12. i-readit2 on

No one can trust them . They seem to be a party of opportunists. They would sell their gran just to get a bit power

    13. Loose_Teach7299 on

People have never forgiven them for the Coalition, they love to pretend it never happened but it did. The tories absolutely took them for a ride. If they had just entered confidence and supply they would’ve had much more power, instead all they really achieved was fixed terms (which have since been done away with).

Not only that, their past three leaders all served as Ministers in the Coalition Government, Cable and Davey sat in cabinet at various points during the Coalition. If they wanted the public to forget and forgive they’d pick someone like Moran or Cooper.

    14. Christian-Metal on

Because Ed Davey is not in any way a serious figure.

    15. Exact_Setting9562 on

If I think they’ll win then I’d vote for them. If by me voting for them then some party I can’t abide looks likely to get in – then I just can’t do that.

    16. Synonymous-Evocation on

See the year 2010-2015 for reasons why.

Ed Davey was a minister in that goverment. They traded principles for power the first chance they got.

    17. Prudent_Psychology57 on

My tin foil hat theory remains that the technology and unregulated frontier of social medias allows for our data to be currency in geopolitical misinformation campaigns. I think society will become 2 finely managed towers of polarised tribalised people at the brink of civil war with eachother and actual liberals will live underground, eventually becoming a mole race.

    18. Martinonfire on

Perhaps they should write some promises on a big board and get the leader to sign it, that’ll get them some votes surely?

    19. Admiral_Eversor on

Because they will just do exactly the same thing that the Tories did, and what labour are doing now, except in yellow ties. That’s why. They’re just another bunch of spineless neoliberals. Nobody wants more of the same.

    20. LurkingWriter25 on

Lib Dems made a coalition with the Tories. No one will ever vote Lib Dem again.

    21. hazzwright on

I did, and they got in in North Shropshire. Voted them in again in the GE.

People want people who represent them. In the 2021 by-election the Tories drafted in someone from Birmingham, Labour pulled out the most Tory-esque person I’ve ever seen, but the Lib Dems put forward a local person who seemed like she had her head screwed on and campaigned well.

    22. P1wattsy on

Because their existence is a symptom of tactical voting

Most vote for them because in their constituency they know the party they actually want to vote for won’t win but they can prevent a party they don’t want to win from winning.

Very few are bothered by whatever policies they throw out there.

    23. PoodleBoss on

Because last time we voted them they fucked over a generation of students going to university by putting people in near life time debt.
      So yes; we haven’t forgotten.

    24. Anansi-the-Spider on

The latest gimmick it to import US scientists, not realising they would come over anyway if instead they said they would fund British science to a decent level

    25. Interesting_Road_380 on

I still haven’t forgiven them for allowing the Tories to put a poor tax on university admissions.

It’s not a loan if it has an income threshold for repayment and gets deducted from your pay alongside your taxes. It’s a masked tax you can have your kids exempted from by donating £9250 a year to the Treasury for 3-4 years.

    26. Safe-Ad-5721 on

Because people live in the past, unless the present suits them.

Even though it was years ago, many people still won’t forget their coalition with the Tories, which actually prevented the Conservatives from enacting some of their worst policies at the time. But people don’t bother to consider this.

They also don’t consider that Ed Davies’ PR stunts are just that—because media reform won’t happen here—meaning right-wing parties get ALL the news coverage. Silly stunts is the only option our third largest party has. Whereas, the likes of Reform just have to say something obnoxious, factually incorrect, or downright insulting to get their arses licked to kingdom come.

    27. Because they haven’t won in my constituency for nearly 100 years.

    28. Large_Choice4206 on

In my opinion it’s the Clegg leadership and the student loan failure.

Personally I like the Lib Dems, I see their policies, I like them, I hear Ed Davey, he seems serious and compassionate. I think the Lib Dem’s should be given another shot in light of the other options, but i think the fallout from their last coalition has still left a bitter taste, even now they’re very much in repair mode

    29. Dry_Acadia_9312 on

They are boring and nobody cares about them, I honestly think that’s why. Also tuition fees.

    30. In 2010 the Lib Dem candidates **publicly** **signed personal pledges** to vote against any rise in fees. Then they voted to triple them.

It’s normal that a junior party in a coalition can’t enact their manifesto – I think most people understand that. But what they did was very dirty politics. They made a big public show of signing ***personal pledges,*** that they then broke. I wouldn’t trust someone who did that to me in my personal life.

    31. Dull_World4255 on

I think a big reason is no one knows what the Lib Dems truly stand for, or, if they stand for anything at all in fact. Look how they bent the knee to the Tories when part of the coalition government and so easily caved on issue they claimed where important to them.
Also, I actually believe Davey himself is a significant problem. Firstly there’s the issue of his time as Minister for Postal affairs and his decision not to investigate the Horizon scandal. Then there’s his strange decision not to attend the state visit because of course, we need more MP’s who throw their toys out of the pram and look to avoid difficult conversations. Finally, there’s his strange statement today in which he claims voting in Farage would result in mass shootings?! WTH?! I’m not Farge’s biggest fan but this is utter crap. That’s why Davey nor any Lib Dem MP could actually explain or provide any logical reasoning as to why this would be the case.

I’ve often considered voting Lib Dem but they just appear to be a party of petulant children who see the world through naïve, rose-tinted glasses.

    32. Derpolitik23 on

The Lib Dems also don’t stand for anything. More so than ether Labour or the Tories.

    33. romeo__golf on

I’ve always been a Lib Dem voter. I guess because they’re not cool and have terrible PR?

    34. Brother-Executor on

Student fee betrayal which has impacted every WORKING young….

    35. They pretty much killed the vote base of anyone on plan 2 student loan after clambering for the student vote…

I’m on plan 1 (graduated 2014) with £36k SLD and now I’m down to the last 4k. My fiancé graduated in 2016, earns over £40k PA and her SLD has gone up from £65k to £67k >_>

Will need quite a bit to overcome that backstab

    36. KernowKermit on

they don’t really seem to offer any clear policy direction that offers hope on the major issues, and seem to just spend their time trying to convince people they’ll be good at running the country because they’re “nice” and fun.

    37. MonitorPowerful5461 on

Aren’t they the 3rd biggest party in England? People do vote for them

    38. Electronic_Cream_780 on

Because right now they aren’t serious. The adjacent constituency has been Lib dem for years and the MPs have been marvellous, which I’m told other places have found too. But enough arsing around with dumb attention seeking ploys

    39. nattydread69 on

Because we remember when they promised to scrap tuition fees, legalise weed and sold themselves as more left wing than Labour. They then inflicted four years of right wing austerity on the British people. Traitors.

    40. I voted for the Liberal Democrat’s once

They’d campaigned on two things that mattered to me

      1. Opposition to Tory economics and hate politics
      2. A commitment to get rid of student loans

They immediately cuddled up to the Tories to get into power and raised student loans.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

    41. strongfavourite on

because what do they stand for? all they are is a party people (usually Tories) vote for in protest when the Tories are in especially poor form

    42. lukethenukeshaw on

The lib Dems are a bunch of part timers who want to do politics as a hobby. One of the senior lib Dems said they should just apply tariffs to musk on question time. What a joke

    43. Because immigration is the only topic that people care about.

    44. Skippymabob on

      1. What they did last time they got voted for

      2. Seriously wtf do they even stand for. There recent leaders have been “Tory mate- turned FB corporate”, “anti-brexit is all that matters”, and “I’m not going to say if I like homosexuals or not”

They’re ideologically all over the shop
