Essentially he knows its stupid but can’t come out and say it without losing his US evangelical donors.

    2. somnamna2516 on

sounds like he’s doubting world renowned pharmacologist and autism expert, professor Donald Trump.

    3. evolveandprosper on

Farage knows its bullshit but he’s afraid to say so. Terrified of upsetting Trump by saying so and terrified of being exposed as a spreader of misinformaton if he backs Trump. So, in his usual courageous way, he runs away from the question.

    4. Hopeful_Escape2266 on

If he could link paracetamol to immigrants, then he would have lots of ideas.

    5. Why are people so enamoured with this sycophant?

Obviously paracetamol doesn’t cause autism, if your only evidence is a guy who previously told people to inject bleach i think we are safe to discount his opinion.

    6. FrosenPuddles on

“Man who likes to have controversial views because it makes him lots of money says he doesn’t know something to be controversial” … cool. Let’s leave it to the scientists then. Why are we giving this coverage instead of, idk, talking to the experts?

    7. When he’s punching down hes bold and bombastic. When asked to criticise his patrons he’s a weak, small man.

      Pathetic.

    8. Adm_Shelby2 on

Why paracetamol of all things.  Did this just happen overnight or has there been a long history of conspiracy theories about paracetamol that I missed?

    9. Commercial-Silver472 on

Why do people want politicians to side with anyone on this. They have no medical training.

    10. lithaborn on

Hedging so hard he should work for the forestry commission

    11. Agreeable_Falcon1044 on

This is the idiot some people are planning to vote for. It’s paracetamol. They give them out like candy in hospitals, you can buy them for a penny in every shop without a prescription. There must be billions of tablets consumed in the uk every year.

The idea it causes autism is so far removed from reality that it’s not even credible to plead ignorance. The whole population would be super autistic at this point.

    12. CheesyBakedLobster on

Says a lot about how he will bow to any and all pressure from the US if he gets anywhere near the government.

    13. I’m sure the GOP with realise their mistake and tell him his opinion shortly

Doesn’t matter how much you suck up nigel he still doesn’t like you

He’s Trump’s lapdog. Why anyone would want this brown nose as our leader is beyond me

    16. Desperate_Caramel_10 on

Well fair enough if he’s saying he as an ex commodities trader he isn’t sufficiently armed to deal with opinions on medicine. The problem is that he reckons that he understands demographics, psychology, social sciences etc that all go into understand immigration – as this same ex commodities trader.

    17. dewittless on

Farage knows everything about what his supporters care about and nothing about things you know to be wrong. Selective ignorance.

    18. pecuchet on

It should be comically easy to take this dickhead down yet nobody is.

    19. Carbonatic on

He said that when it comes to science, he doesn’t side with anybody. So not even the scientists.

    20. SpottedDicknCustard on

      > Asked if he would side with medical experts who say it is dangerous to make the link, Mr Farage said: “I wouldn’t, when it comes to science, I don’t side with anybody.

      Self serving snivelling coward.

Science and education is going to be assaulted by this mob should they take power.

    21. lostandfawnd on

Well shit, Farage is on the TV so much, he can go away and look it up.. and then tell us.

    22. sheslikebutter on

      oooh I dunno!

      ooh I’m just asking questions!

ooh! i cant explain how i’d implement anything! just vote for me anyway!

    23. SecurityPenguin on

Try to imagine Farage talking like this about microplastics, forever chemicals, or the pollution from burning fossil fuels. You know, things which actually *are* harming us, and which he and his American donors are more than happy for us all to be poisoned by.

    24. New-Doctor9300 on

AKA Trump has said stupid shit and his lapdog cant defend him on it.

    25. redplastiq on

Why we are so exposed to every opinion (or absence of opinion) of this man. He is, like, everywhere these days. How long is left for the ‘free’ and ‘independent’ press to go through all the money he and his billionaire fren paid them. Man has an aesthetically unpleasant appearance, just to add to the suffering.

    26. merryman1 on

The full quote – “I’ve no idea. You know, we were told thalidomide was a very safe drug and it wasn’t. I don’t know and you don’t know.”

So the usual mealy mouthed cowardly bullshit from Farage/Reform. Can’t just openly say what he means but has to blow a quick little dog whistle to reassure the crusty conspiracy nuts that he’s still on side.

    27. francisdavey on

In principle saying that he doesn’t know would be fine, because I assume he doesn’t know. “Knowing” would require a bit of study and thought, which would be too much work for him.

But in reality he says he doesn’t know but then mentions thalidomide, which is not at all innocent.

And the research evidence is probably too subtle for him. There certainly is a fairly well established correlation (which scientists do sometimes refer to as a “link”) between acetaminophen in pregnancy and a risk of neurological disorder in the infant, but there are lots of good reasons why that might not be a *causative* link.

So the question is currently being investigated carefully and, as yet, the possibility of a small risk has not been entirely ruled out.

Whereas thalidomide was cancelled pretty quickly – in the UK after three years of use – as the problems with it became extremely clear very fast.

    28. rennarda on

That alone should disqualify him from any position of responsibility.

    29. After-Dentist-2480 on

Farage shit scared of contradicting Trump, even though Trump can barely remember who he is.

He’s willing to put people at risk with medical lies rather than call out Trump.

    30. RDHertsUni on

How about we rely on someone who would know to answer that question? Perhaps some kind of expert who had studied the field?

    31. YeOldeGeek on

Fuck off with this medicine/vaccine induced bollocks – autism is GENETIC!

Whenever I hear the rise of autism discussed, I never hear what is imho the *real* reason mentioned. Yes, we’ve become better at diagnosing it, and better at spotting the traits adopted by those who mask.

I’m on the spectrum and tried to be *normal* for 40+ years, my siblings have similar traits, they come from our father, who in turn is very similar to how his mother was.

Society has changed in the last 60-70 years, technology has come to the fore. Us Autists are typically not good at repetitive manual labour, we don’t take orders well, we argue, we need things to be explained more thoroughly.

With the rise in technology based professions, we have better life prospects – and are thus more likely to be able to earn a decent income, settle down, have a family – and thus PASS ON OUR DODGY GENES. My father was one of the mainframe programmers back in the 60s and 70s, that’s how he could afford to get married, buy a house and have 3 kids!

Thankfully, the traits my kids have inherited from me are very minor, and tend to be the more positive ones – single mindedness, determined beligerence…

Put simply, we are diagnosing it more effectively AND there is more of it around to diagnose, because we are more likely to breed than before!
