I’d argue it’s more like Chamberlain in the 1930s, too little too late

    2. CurrencyDesperate286 on

Ok so were the Soviets or the US wrong to build up arms at the time too?

Such a terrible comparison, Germany has absolutely zero designs on anything even remotely similar to the 1930’s.

If she actually wants to be our main diplomatic representative, she’d want to have a bit more basic cop on than slandering one of our main allies by comparing them to genocidal fascists, especially with the sensitive history.

More evidence she is a good local politician but has zero knowledge and experience on the international stage.

How the hell can you compare today’s German re-armament to that of the Nazis FFS

    4. Really now? Of all the countries in the world arming she picks on Germany?

I’d love to live in a world without armies. But that’s not the world we inhabit.

Considering all that’s going on with Russia and the like we need strong European forces.

      Irelands neutrality depends on it.

I know people believe that the media have an agenda to make her look as ridiculous as possible and accentuate every controversial word she says and maybe they’re right, but the truth is she puts her foot in her mouth constantly.

Imagine being in this position and getting something so fundamentally incorrect. What a misread.

Well, one major difference is how the Polish feel about it.

Ah yes, if theres one thing modern Germany loves its being compared to the Nazis, just the sort of rhetoric we need from a future President.

Wow… I’m honestly impressed, are we sure she’s not a sleeper agent to utterly cripple the left in Ireland cos I’m not sure one could be doing more damage than she is…

She is completely out of her depth in national politics.

I was starting to warm to her, but no she’s as disillusioned as I feared.

Looks like I’ll be voting for Humphries because there’s no way I’m voting for a celebrity candidate.

It’s actually pretty impressive the rate at which she’s torpedoing her own campaign

Looks at the Polish having the largest battle tank army in Europe…’Am I a joke to you?’ Nice Rheinmetal you have there, would be a pity if someone were to annex it…

Man she should stop talking. Seriously. Keep. It. Shut.

Edit: On second thought let her talk. 🤡😂

What a stupid and naive comment. Appeasement doesn’t work and sometimes diplomacy fails. It’s naive to think that we can talk our way out of every situation

    17. How does someone like this actually make it this far in politics and be in the running for president, really hard to credit

    18. RomfordWellington on

Any hope of a preference is gone. Very surprised at Labour, Greens and Soc Dems for backing a loose cannon like this. She’s pitching herself as a Higgins continuity candidate, but she couldn’t be further from it. Higgins is so careful with his language, but Connolly doesn’t think at all.

She’s like the hipster version of Gemma O’Doherty.

    19. guyfawkes5 on

Like with a lot of her statements, I can usually find a nugget of truth or a benign opinion at its core. Saying ‘if countries arm for a war they historically have a habit of starting one’, even if I personally think that opinion that is naive or dumb, is less objectionable than a clumsy reference to Germany and the 1930’s.

The same goes for a lot of some of her weirder statements on Palestine or Ukraine. She’s well spoken but she doesn’t talk carefully, and this is an election for a diplomatic and speech giving position.

It’s important to read the article, as there are multiple potential interpretations here, e.g.

      – She’s saying that the general build-up of weapons in Europe is akin to the 1930s, and just happened to pick Germany as an example without any specific implication

      – She deliberately picked Germany as an example because she believes that what’s happening in Germany now parallels Germany in the 1930s

One of these interpretations is fine, she should have just picked a different example.

The other interpretation is entirely wrong, and is pure tankie.

    21. Can we get some left leaning candidates that have a foreign policy beyond “war is bad, peace is good” while ignoring any of the surrounding circumstances.

    22. Adventurous-Snow-281 on

What’s her deal with not mentioning that Russia is the main reason Germany is rearming? She just completely glosses over that and almost frames it as a European overreaction to the threats from the east or even worse compares EU Germany to Hitlers Germany of the 30’s, what the fuck?

This sounds eerily similar to viewpoints of Putins Russia I’ve heard over the last 4 years. “The Germans are nazis and the west is dangerous and reckless for reacting to our actions”

Hope she crashes and burns in this election, we don’t need anymore Neville Chamberlains running around appeasing the worst of the worst just so we “might” be okay in the end.
