Don’t worry Farage will promise Fish and Chips for everyone.

Well yes, that’s what happens when everyone and his mum mass trawls for decades so the fish stocks can’t replenish.

They’ll just use some garbage fish if they aren’t already

Well Canada allowed fishing off the coast of Newfoundland for the first time in decades last year because their stocks had recovered so much so there will be replacement, only question is if the EU respects our ban (or if we’ll actually put one in place) off the coast of Scotland after granting them rights this May.

How’s haddock supply these days? Tastier anyway, hopefully we can avoid a repeat performance

It’ll default to “fish and chips £12.99” – and they can use anything

If a chippy has fish on the menu board and not specifically cod then it’s likely pollock or some other alternative.
Fish fingers in supermarkets are another example cod fish fingers are alot more expensive than just fish fingers.

I thought most Fish and Chip shops use Pollock now anyway.

I have been hearing about the demise of Cod for a very long time. Honestly I swear it’s at least 20 years we have been about to run out of Cod. I am not denying there might be issues with Cod levels but at this stage a scare story about running out of Cod is starting to feel like the phew what a scorcherr headline the Sun run every year.

I always preferred haddock anyway. Rock salmon can fuck off though. Have you tried battered halloumi it’s absolutely top tier.

Trade journalist chiming in here. This will have only a limited impact on our fish and chip supplies as almost all of our cod is being supplied from Norway, Iceland and Russia (via China) anyway.
In general, though, cod stocks in the Barents Sea are under stress anyway due to climate change, with the fish’s food moving further northwards and spawning rates reducing each year. Hence, international cod prices are going through the roof, not just in the UK.
The best advice would be to buy haddock, where stocks are stable (and in Norway at least, increasing next year) or actual British fish like scampi, mackerel, herring (kippers!), Dover sole and Cornish hake.

Hasn’t this been going on for years? I thought this industry was going under about a decade ago.

Well to paraphrase Marie Antoinette “let them eat pollock” (or hake , gurnard, halibut) . /s
OTOH a fish and chip shop near where I previously lived was caught out selling coley as cod , fined by the Council and eventually shut down.

The price of fish and chips is crazy these days. It will just keep going up, a lot of chippies will close because people aren’t going any more and then fish stocks will recover as there will be less demand for the fish.

It doesn’t help that 20% of the world’s cod consumption is confined to a single country… looking at you, Portugal 😂 bacalhau (salted cod) is absolutely to die for though

I’ve been stockpiling sardines. Went from a cheap meal to completely unobtainable for several weeks.

Rarely buy fish and chips anymore. Far too expensive these days.

Seems like a drastic situation.
Even if the quota is zero the demand will still be there which will cause prices to increase and make illegal fishing surge.
Would it be too far to suggest that maybe they should be a moratorium on selling cod completely or partially via targeting it to just chip shops/takeaways whilst allowing bycatch to be sold.

i can see fish and chips being 20 quid a portion before long

I see this story every year. They then say chip shops are going to change to hake. Then they don’t.
I’m good either way. I love fish.

People don’t need to eat cod. As the saying goes – there are plenty of fish in the sea, and a lot of them are either cheaper and taste mostly the same. Can’t remember the last time I deliberately ordered and ate cod, as it’s mostly haddock in pubs and restaurants anyway (haddock and chips), and in a chippy I always ask for haddock.
People thinking it has to be COD and chips need to grow up, and think of the bigger picture.
Haddock, basa, bream, soles etc are all suitable alternatives (sole maybe not so much, as it is a flat fish).

They’re raping the North Sea, just as they did with the Baltic. The ever glorious EU will not be denied!

Probably a good thing because I can no longer afford it.
