There’s not enough to prove anything just in this article, but I suppose the idea is he might have used Agricultural Property Relief via this field. Which would be devastating considering he went after farmers and APR right after coming in.
Trusts are just smart property keeping, any basic estate planner will tell you the same.

Not sure if I am missing something. If he bought the land, why didn’t he just allow his parents to use the land and leave it at that? What was the point in giving the land to his parents and then setting up a trust?
It doesn’t seem like he did anything wrong, but I can’t see any reason, good or bad, why he did it at all?
So he flatly denies setting up a trust and says he simply owned the field and let his parents use it.. He also points out he paid capital gains tax when he sold it in 2022..
Tax experts meanwhile argue the wording of his 1996 declaration looks like a trust which would have kept the field out of his parents’ estates for IHT purposes..
Either way, the estate may never have been big enough to trigger tax, so the practical saving could be zero..
So the issue is less about legality and more about consistency and transparency from someone who has made “tax fairness” a political platform..
What he did was lawful but he should just come out and say everyone can do it if they wish.
