I wonder if there were any moles making mole hills in this field? Just in case GB news wants to make a mountain out of them.

He bought a plot of land so his seriously ill mum could be close to the donkeys she loved in her final days?
What a bastard!

Starmer literally getting stick for creating a donkey sanctuary now. The man is cursed.

£20k to buy a field for donkeys for his mum behind her house. That’s the story. Fucking wow. Send him to space I guess.

I think it speaks volumes that we have a tax system that has so many features that are legal but considered grounds for moral attack. Right wing agitators’ playground.

This just makes him sound relatable, why would you even try to make a scandal out of a donkey sanctuary?

This just the same tabloid (and yes, the Independent is a tabloid since it became a Saudi mouthpiece) “The man who hated Britain” bullshit story about the Milliband brothers’ father, based on 1 line in his teenage diary, before he fought for Britain in WW2. There’s a lot wrong with Starmer but this is just deliberately distorted character assassination.

Such a nothing story. Proper attempt at a stitch up.

There’s not enough to prove anything just in this article, but I suppose the idea is he might have used Agricultural Property Relief via this field. Which would be devastating considering he went after farmers and APR right after coming in.

Trusts are just smart property keeping, any basic estate planner will tell you the same.

What are the press in this country playing at? Their job is to report on stuff that actually matters. This is pathetic.

The problem here is when there is no news, because the government are not doing anything, journalists just have to publish whatever nonsense they can.
Nonsense like this is a direct result of a total lack of action in the 101 issues we should be hearing about.

Not sure if I am missing something. If he bought the land, why didn’t he just allow his parents to use the land and leave it at that? What was the point in giving the land to his parents and then setting up a trust?
It doesn’t seem like he did anything wrong, but I can’t see any reason, good or bad, why he did it at all?
Socialistinoneroom on
So he flatly denies setting up a trust and says he simply owned the field and let his parents use it.. He also points out he paid capital gains tax when he sold it in 2022..
Tax experts meanwhile argue the wording of his 1996 declaration looks like a trust which would have kept the field out of his parents’ estates for IHT purposes..
Either way, the estate may never have been big enough to trigger tax, so the practical saving could be zero..
So the issue is less about legality and more about consistency and transparency from someone who has made “tax fairness” a political platform..

>The Sunday Times reported he gave the land to his parents through a structure which meant when they died, the field’s value was excluded from their estate.
“But I did not transfer the legal title – that remained with me,” he added.
So he bought the land and let his parents use it? So he was in effect their landlord? Do landlords normally pay inheritance tax upon the death of their tenants? (/s)

Our media is absolutely cooked. Fair and balanced reporting just doesn’t exist outside of a few individuals and fringe reporting. It’s all a right wing racket.
Starmer (who I have mixed feelings about personally) is set upon by these ghouls for every little thing when objectively he’s completely removed from the kinds of incompetence and corruption we’ve witness in 14 years of Tory rule.

That’s disgraceful, how dare he uh uhm buy land and make a donkey sanctuary for his parents!!!
Like don’t get me wrong, I dislike Starmer, but this is such a nothing burger of a story lol, hell actually it’s the same kinda thing I’d wanna do (if I had the money lmao).
It’s such a desperate attempt at making a scandal it’s sad.
