Of course it is. It is literally giving these nutters lumping all immigrants into one cohort ammunition for their baseless hate. This is a piss poor decision by a piss poor government that have done nothing to curb the issue.

This money could easily go to places where it would make some bit of a difference like mental health, childcare, infrastructure, etc.

It’s also a logistical joke: what’s to stop someone taking the money, leaving, and then re-applying? What country are they even expected to go to back home (even if it’s unsafe), or just anywhere? And how do you enforce it if they don’t leave?

Most people seeking asylum aren’t trying to grab a quick payday, they’re looking for safety and a future. Acting like €10k is what they’re really after is insulting, heartless, and just plays into right-wing dog whistles that they are all leeches off taxpayers.

If the government actually cared, they’d invest that money into speeding up asylum decisions, integration, and social services that benefit everyone. Instead, we get this headline grabbing nonsense that solves nothing. FF and FG really have to take their head out from under the sand one of these days.

Look if done correctly it could work. I’m fairly to the left on immigration but we cannot ignore the strain it is putting on things like housing. It is not the immigrants fault that we have a housing crisis, we should help those who need help. We should also help those who want to come and make a better life for themselves but we cannot help everyone.

If someone comes here claiming Asylum but takes the 10k and goes home then you have to ask if their life was truly in danger.

I’m strongly in favor of skilled/need based immigration into Ireland, we need it not only because of a lack of particular skills, but because of our birth rates are below replacement level.

However, the asylum system in Ireland is completely messed up, we have huge abuse of the system which has massively negative effects on society at large.

On a pure financial standing, with a cost of €120,000 on average to cater for each person claiming they’re a refugee, then a payment of €10,000 represents good value. The government hasn’t had the backbone to tackle the IPA head on, but this is a compromise that allows them to save face.

Implementation of this system should be robust; it needs to be genuinely once off, finger printing on exit and removal of reentry rights in the future. It should also be done in sync with an overhaul of the IPA system, a complete review of safe countries, faster application times and forced removals.
