Many of us do not have a medical or GP card either. Between rent and food and the utility bills there is little or nothing left.

The healthcare industrial complex. This is what we should be worried about. A public system so slow and inefficient people pay several hundred at least for attention which may be no better but is quicker and a bit posher (for thousands a year.)

Yeah and health providers know it. Prices feel like they’re being jacked up.

Surely the profits of the health insurance providers and the private health providers should be taxed to pay for public health. Otherwise it’ll just end up being like the US.

It feels deeply morally wrong to me to profit from healthcare. I’ve never had health insurance, but even as someone who despises the industry I’ve paid for private treatment for my family on occasions where the public system waiting lists are too long. Any party proposing a levy on the profits of private healthcare and health insurance would get my vote!

That’s kinda what happens when you have people getting skin cancer and it takes over a year to see a surgeon.
I know this because I know someone who didn’t have health insurance and had to pay private because the cancer kept getting bigger and bigger.

And that is why we will never have proper universal healthcare.
Too much profits in it for the insurance companies.

And in most cases all it does is give you access to the disfunctional health care system your taxes already paid for.

Well no shit. A healthcare system where it takes years to be seen is objectively shit, regardless of how good the actual treatment quality is. After all, it doesn’t matter how good the doctor is if you don’t see them?

This slippery slope of hospital privatization only leads to one outcome: insurance companies and their executives get richer, while ordinary people are forced to pay thousands each year.

Personally only have it because of work..still went public for pregnancy and haven’t had to use private health insurance yet.
However, if you’re getting private health insurance, procedures should only be done in private hospitals. Shouldn’t get to use public infrastructure. That’s just an opinion, I don’t know how these things work to be honest

I’d say it’s important to note, an awful of those people probably have it though work, with the employer providing it as a benefit.
I wonder what percentage of people actually have it outside of work? An awful lot less I’d say

An attempt is being made to privatise our health service, just like the tories tried in the uk
Even cancer treatments are now often superior in private healthcare which used to never be true

It’s shite I have private health care . The only thing it’s good for is getting money back on therapy and go visits .
If something goes wrong in a private hospital they take you to a public one . I have a chronic illness so have been in a fair few hospitals. I’ll take Beaumont over black rock every day of the week.

I don’t support privatized health care and health care for profit, but I think there’s some benefits to not have a single unified single payer healthcare system.
I personally think it would be better to strongly regulate the insurance companies and ensure they are non profit only. And promote vhi as the public alternative to give competition.
There are countries in Europe where this works very well and they don’t have hospitals which is plagued with delays and long waiting lists. They infact have far better outcomes than single payer systems. Netherlands is a good example of this.

This isn’t good, BTW. The privatization of our healthcare isn’t a good thing. Healthcare shoibe be free to all, and insurance should not be needed.

A lot of people use VHI for their disabled children but aren’t getting it for themselves as it’s only way to access therapies like SLT OT etc in a way they can afford due to the money back. There’s specific plans for this purpose.

There’s a 16 week waiting list for a private consultant that I’m waiting to see for an issue that’s impacting my ability to go to work.
We are very lucky that in an emergency, we would always be looked after in Ireland. But if you have any kind of chronic or ongoing illness, you’re essentially fucked. Even if you have the money to go private, you’re waiting.
I’m one of the people that ended up taking out healthcare insurance this year after spending over €500 in GP visits alone so far in 2025.

No need for anyone to have health insurance in this country. It’s a waste of monsy. Put the money you would have been paying for insurance into a savings kitty and dip into it if you need to for anything health related. You’ll still spend less than insurance.

My dad is a bit of a character – every time my mam goes for a procedure, or to get something checked out, he says :
“Don’t tell them you have health insurance, you might get it done for free”.
Seeing the years-long waiting lists she is on, and the fact that I had a mole which suddenly changed last week, and a procedure to remove it this week. He’s wrong.
Yeah it’s a scandal that we have to have it. But I choose to have it in the current circumstances.

Indictment of the chronically inefficient public health service. With the money being pumped into the thing, trolleys shouldn’t exist, and everyone should be seen within a day. But it’s not the case. The waste of money would liquidate a publicly traded company. It just wouldn’t be acceptable what the HSE is doing.
