Lifting the cap just for working people on UC (a suggestion in the article) is unlikely to get past their own MPs. Even limiting it to three or four children would probably be pretty controversial

So you going to see an increase of single mother having kids just to gain more benefits and get a free council house.

      Great news.

I wonder if this would have been better placed supporting middle earner couples who are struggling to afford any children but aren’t entitled to benefits. I know many in decent jobs (teachers, nurses – that sort of thing) who just flat out cannot afford any kids.

To support more than 2 children, at least where I live, you need to be on a pretty chunky income – housing costs especially ramp up significantly.

So far the plan to fill the government financial blackhole has seemingly consisted of constantly digging more holes. Short-term gain for long-term pain, we’re already paying 10% of all government income on simply servicing existing debt due to the Covid spending spree. Instead of fighting to reduce it the percentage is being pushed higher and higher.

She’s fucking woeful. A scrap that’s been dropped on the floor to the plebs… right before the VAT rise and more help for her wealthy friends through tax breaks.

    6. Ok-Math-9082 on

Great. More fucking tax money going to the irresponsible and feckless.

I remember everyone moaning that Labour were happy to continue maintaining the cap on child benefit and now that it’s being lifted you would think it’s means the end of the country going by the comments here.

Did some of you swear a blood-oath to hate this Labour government no matter what?

Lifting kids out of poverty is great all for it but this certainly is not going to achieve it. I have two kids and serious consideration went into the decision to have them both. I certainly couldn’t afford to have more than 2 the extra costs such as houses and cars would be financial suicide. It’s not the taxpayers responsibility to pay for people’s irresponsible decisions. All for giving extra help to the poor kids as it’s not their fault but giving the parents money that in most cases is going to be wasted isn’t the right way.

Invest in a kid now, get some pension money when you’re older. Win win?

    10. So we’ve gone from cutting benefits to removing the cap.

      An interesting development…

Will this encourage more British people to have kids or is it just going to mean more benefits to those who already have more than two?

Well this will help with her “too much money and nothing to spend it on” AND her “concerns labour is too popular and it isn’t really fair on the other parties” issues.

More of meta commentary but I’m getting whiplash between the before election ‘Kier Starmer the kid starver’ and now its ‘handouts for the workshy’. I’m completely baffled how labour are somehow too right wing for the left of the party and too left wing for the right of the party.

There has to be a safety net, no doubt, but the vast majority of people don’t need for then a couple of kids and certainly no more than you can genuinely afford to support.

    14. KingThorongil on

Will it now be 3 child cap or extended to families raising a school bus full of children?

    15. Matrees1 on

Fantastic. Love that I’ll be financing the irresponsible who have but can’t afford children…

    16. scottrobertson on

Months of political pain by refusing to do it, and now that most people don’t care anymore they are going to lift it with no real upside. They really need to hire some PR people.

    17. palmerama on

I can’t believe this. A bigger fiscal hole, and they’re still dodging the question of tax rises? This is the opposite of fairness for middle PAYE earners.

    18. Toastlove on

      >but if you earn to much money we will start taxing your child benefits or take them off you entirely.

      >the people who can have more kids than you but don’t work can still have it though

Never thought I would be in the position where that was going to happen to me, but 4 years of solid inflation is getting me there.

Underclass, prepare for further tax-payer funded breeding.

    20. spindoctor13 on

Disgraceful choice, what happened to “there is no money”? How much will tax go up to pay for this?

    21. No_Tailor_5157 on

Great. More handouts to over breeding scum bags on council estates.

At least in 20 odd years labour might have a few voters back i suppose.

    22. Zephinism on

Good change. I know a couple of single mum’s with 3 kids and they need all the help they can get tbh.

Government also needs to help crack down on people not paying the correct level of child support.
