Hey. Maybe and garda and other key workers should be paid enough to afford housing without extra government supports?

I’ll wait to see what low cost rent actually is before judging this.
If it’s reasonable it’s an actually half decent idea
Like everything else in this country this system will be abused and misused.
In my opinion they should not give an allowance to select workers, this is ridiculous. Allowance should be shared evenly amungst all works in simular wages. Introduce a third tax band to assist with this
Deadlines:

2. Running to June 2027 – engagement with owners to secure commitments to refurbish or sell their properties, enforcement against non-co-operating owners.
3. From January 2027 to May 2028 – Construction is expected to get under way.

Well…they had worse ideas. Lets see how its implemented. I hope they have the balls to deal with non cooperating owners swiftly and not waste years and years……might send a message….
Would Garda Staff fall under this category? Clerical staff, analysts etc.

Before anyone gets too up in arms, the definition of key workers is about as broad as you’d expect.
I’m all for bold moves – God knows we need more of them in this country. Remains to be seen if it will actually be delivered, but I’ll keep an open mind
Sounds terrible. Housing based on your job is a terrible idea. What happens if you have to leave the job?
I understand the need for this to ensure key services aren’t impacted by rent but it just feels depressing we’re getting squeezed in the middle. I’m working crazy hours to save for a house but I don’t qualify for affordable housing because I’ve saved money.
