We need to get councils doing the building again. Clearly, relying on the free market isn’t providing enough stability to secure the construction workers we need. This is very clearly a job for socialism.

Only today we had Michael Martin telling the Construction Industry Federation that they need to import more construction workers, and yet they are sending workers out of the country.

How in the name of feck, at a time when demand is significantly greater than the supply there is still uncertainty? Should the demand for housing be 20 times greater? 30?

Successive governments really shot themselves in the feet and head at the same time, they spent a lot of time and effort attracting external investors to the property market and then put limits on them as it was unpopular with voters.

They have reformed the planning process so that it is difficult and uncertain if any project can get through it. They also made the process so difficult to do that it is for local officials to work with developers. Oversight and legal process were more important than actually having a working planning system.

The level of housing needed has consistently underestimated and under delivered for years. Having no long term plans for cities and towns as it would mean having to tackle unpopular issues like density of population, building height and future of the towns and cities.

The governments also don’t want to build massive estates like back in the 70’s as the cost will be huge and no guarantee it will get through planning. Look at the metro project for Dublin, costs rising after each new estimation and still not out of the planning. They are already getting in trouble from fiscal advisory bodies for too much spending.

Government run by landlords were elected into power by landlords.

Construction bosses are full of shit. The business is uncertain by nature, they are sending some of their staff abroad because some of their work is abroad and always has been.

They are going where the money is.

I met a lad in Dublin airport 2 weeks ago only back from Denmark on rotation, building data centers, he said he’s making 2-3 times the money he would working as an electrician in Dublin, so can you blame them?
