Will this include a triage system? Because for some, it won’t be an issue if they have to wait 4 weeks, for others, they might have a serious problem and need to see a GP within a few days.

Quite a few people don’t use the internet or, especially, smart phones. Will they be pushed to the back of the queues?

Yes, great being able to make appointments but doesn’t effect how long you might have to wait for your appointment.

Hmmm. I wonder who built the system that all these independent practices now have to buy and how cosy they are with somebody in Westminster.

Edit: I looked it up, the company formerly known as EMIS are now a wholly owned subsidiary of for profit US outfit United Health. Who are so popular in their home country that someone is literally facing the death penalty for murdering the CEO. Not that I applaud any of this but isn’t that just a tiny bit interesting?

      *in England.

BBC – I know England makes up most of the population, but try to remember the rest of us 🥲

Anything rather than the hopeless ‘ring at 8am then be ignored all day’ system. Why have receptionists at all if they don’t answer the phone in the day?

Even when you turn up you check in on a screen now.

My GP has one but it just does not work on any computer I have tried. You just a message about an insecure connection, even at work and when using any browser. I have no idea why but it means I cannot book an appointment online and have to deal with the phone scramble.

My GP has been using an online only system for about 18 months – but if you don’t have access to a computer or can’t access a computer, the receptionist will do the form for you over the phone.

The forms are then triaged by advanced nurse practitioners however, if you feel it’s been incorrectly triaged, you can contact the surgery and they’ll reevaluate.

The form system is left open until all appointments are filled so usually switches off at lunchtime but you can call them in the afternoon if something arises so you can get an appointment.

Well, I can tell you it’s not happening. At least no with my GP :/

    8. FitSolution2882 on

Yes, and they still have a fucking timer on it.

      Online? Yes.

Login when you need? Fuck no! Between 8am and 9am on a Thursday only…..

Good. My practice used to offer it and then stopped.

This is really not a very well thought out idea. Have they increased GP employment or training places to cover the additional 7 hours a week? What happens when someone fills in an online form at 1829? Who actually does the triage? (here’s a hint, it’s not a doctor).

Patients cant do admin better than reception

What you’ll end up with is an inefficient use of a GPs day, that a receptionist would have structured in a better way surely?

Ours has appointment bookings available from 8am. They’re all gone 10sec later and I’m not kidding. Literally 10sec. We only do same day appointments so if you aren’t lucky enough to navigate 5-6 button presses in a sequence to make a booking, then you’re tough out of luck and you have to try the next day and the next day. No future bookings available. No walk-in. No phone bookings unless you’re pre-approved as someone who can’t use the online system.

    13. Justonemorecupoftea on

One of the challenges with online booking is the number of no shows. Especially for things in a week or so that sort themselves out. So it needs to be easy to cancel appointments and prompts should be automated to say the day before “you have an appointment tomorrow, can’t make it click to rebook” or something like that.

    14. limeflavoured on

Didn’t some surgeries do this before but only have the online form available during office hours?

    15. lollipoppizza on

My GP practice had a great online system where you could put in a request at any time. Recently, it changed where you can go only put in a request between 8am-5pm and half the time they dont accept any more requests because they are “full”! Completely defeats the purpose of an online system! How can you effectively triage if half the requests can’t even be put through?!

My GPs online booking system turns off out of hours which is quite annoying.

It’s a poorly thought out gimmick to look good for the public from a government intent on vilifying general practice and who dont understand that you can’t run free at the point of access healthcare in the same way as you run a hairdressers! You cant get blood from a stone and you can’t magic more GPs and more appointments out of thin air, but that’s what this is telling practices they need to do without any form of funding or investment for the additional work they’re expecting from people who are already overloaded.
