My clubcard is on my phone (they don’t give the cards out anymore) so going in and then getting my wallet is just an extra unnecessary step when I’ve got a payment method right there.

Only reason why I still use my wallet is so that I can easily choose which card I use (because not all places take Amex), I don’t like having them all on my phone like that, idk.

Not unsurprising considering it’s more convenient and more secure than carrying a wallet round.

Very rarely do I take my wallet out these days.

Day one adopter of Apple Pay. 2015 I think? Many people looked at me like I was mad to begin with. Of course it worked on contactless machines in other countries like France who hadn’t got Apple Pay yet and there it really confused them, paying on the watch too.

I still carry a frozen card in the car which I think I’ve used twice but I’ve not carried a card in my pocket since then apart from abroad.

The new stuff they’ve rolled out is good. Being able to effectively see my statement and spending breakdown by category.

I hate doing this, but it is useful if I forget my wallet.

I don’t really see how this is bad.

I’m disabled and can’t open my wallet and take out cash/card at the counter, but I can lift my phone and hold it to pay contactless.

I did only make the change from physical to contactless after becoming disabled but the accessibility it has provided is very helpful in day to day life.

I’m in favour of it and would just like for older people(like in my family) to be properly taught how to transition and use this new method more reliably(and warned of potential risks involved).

This seems a bit like the damaged airplane meme, the data for cash won’t show because there’s no data to mine: people are not going to tell some random how they paid for x, y or z in cash to save a few quid.

It’s a minor gripe but getting through the tube barriers needs to run like clockwork, and vast majority of people who can’t get their contactless to work are using their phones for payment. It’s a minor source of major commuter rage every single rush hour.

Reason I don’t depend on it is that if I lose my phone, I’m doubly fucked. Still carry a wallet with me for that reason.

I’m amazed it’s not higher, I haven’t regularly taken a wallet or card out with me since the beginning of COVID. It’s just better than card payments, there is no limit and you never have to enter a pin, and it’s one less thing to carry.

Edit: also useful tip lots of people don’t know, on iPhone at least(probably android as well) you can set a card as your express travel card so you can just tap it on ticket barriers without having to do anything, and also your phone will continue to work for travel tap ins even if your phone runs out of battery.

I’m starting to think I might be old fashioned. I don’t use any apps on my phone that link to any accounts whatsoever as I consider it a security risk.

Am I being a bit daft?

I’ve not carried my actual wallet in years. I just have an apple wallet on the back of my phone with my driving license and bank card in case I need cash out. It just works. You’re going to get the cash is kind crowd, but whatever.

    11. Mobile payment is safer and more convenient.

I just wish there was a low power option where should your phone battery die. You can still scan it on the reader and input your pin to pay. Similar to how your physical cards work.

If we had that option, then there would be zero reason for anyone to ever need a physical card again.

I use only Apple pay for every transaction now, every one of my credit cards + store cards, loyalty cards etc. is in my apple wallet. I have been trying to convince my wife that this is far safer than using your actual credit card since the card details are not shared with the merchant, making credit card fraud far more difficult.

If you ever visit the big cities in China you will be amazed to see that cash has now virtually disappeared and mobile payments (Alipay or Wechat pay) is used for absolutely everything. Eventually we will go the same way.

I still have cash on me since many takeaways for instance still only take cash for some reason (well…actually i think we all know the reason) and sometimes i prefer to pay restaurant tips in cash although you can usually add the tip option on your contactless as well.

I pay on my watch, I don’t even have to go in my pocket.

But still people go ‘ewwWWWWwww’ or savagely take the piss when I do, ‘get James Bond here!’

Slack jawed yokels, the lot of ‘em!

    14. surprised it’s not more, ive been using Apple Pay since it was released and dont know people who dont

I use my phone. But I still carry 1 credit card and 1 debit card in case I loose my phone or what ever.

    16. SalahStappen on

Did anyone else have major issues with this when it first came out? Swear it used to be really unreliable, was for me anyway. Always just carry a card around these days just in case

    17. I haven’t had my bank card / wallet on me since before COVID.

I honestly don’t know why anyone would.

    18. steve7612 on

I find it amusing when some people say they don’t trust it, yet carry their cards in a case inside their phone. Which is the worst if someone can get the card and access to the one time passcode on the phone screen if both are stolen together.

    19. Luke_4686 on

Pretty much always yeah. Phone or tap my card. Haven’t carried cash for years unless I’m putting cash from a birthday card in the bank 😂

    20. Never understood this. My debit card never runs out of battery and i don’t need to unlock it to use it

I work in retail so I must have to deal with the other 50% who seem to have no concept of how to use a card machine but somehow insist they can’t pay cash anymore

Just because I can do something one way doesn’t mean I want the other taken away. I’ve been getting into watching the golf recently, that doesn’t mean I want to see the end of football

    23. slip-slop-slap on

I don’t even have it set up on my phone. I don’t have or want a lock code or anything on my phone and that’s typically required, so I will stick to my bank card.
