until the fall of the Berlin Wall, many white Eastern Europeans were among the most oppressed and degraded people in the world. they were colonized, exploited, tortrued, dehumanized, just like the victims of neocolonialism in Asia, Africa and South America. And that was not so very long ago.
Some of these nations are still struggling just has hard to recover from their period of being colonized as the rainbow nations are. Especially the ones that have not been guaranteed in security alliances like NATO and have had to do their best on their own. Ukraine being an example of this.

Thing is definition of white. I am a very white person, from a 90% portuguese/french background. In UK someone told me I am white, but not white white, as I have some different characteristics as underskin tone that even being pale white my skin tone is more desaturated olive than the desaturated pink.
I politely pointed out that by finnish standards british people would also not be white white, and that was the end of that conversation.
So, skin tone is a matter of perception, some Japanese descendent may look very japanese to weastern eyes but clearly not japanese in Japan…

She was murdered by a man who had a history of mental illness. His mother tried desperately to get him help to no avail. Government services in the US are incredibly weak and they’re getting worse.
Oddly this is largely due to white supremacy – the fear by a chunk of the US population that a non-white person might benefit from their tax dollars. In a sane country, folks put money towards an actual healthcare system. If you’re really lucky, you live a life with regular preventative checkups and are fine and you end up contributing way more than you use. And yes, that is lucky – you have your health your whole life!
Meanwhile there are people like Decarlos Brown who have a severe mental illness and need a lot of expensive care who get more than they pay in.
And why do countries – including Ukraine – do that? Because it reduces situations like this and because it’s just a basic thing modern societies should do.
The reality is that both Iryna Zarutska and Decarlos Brown are victims of white supremacy. As an American I’m very sorry that we have not addressed that problem and I feel awful for everyone who falls victim to it.

Or, when that lady from New Zealand, I believe, who was a permanent resident in the US, went to Canada with her child, but on their way back they were detained because of something in her papers, and sent to the ICE facility in Texas (?), where they spent a considerable amount of time (a month?).
I mean, they are all white, but not from the US. They got.. mistreated in the US, by the US, although not killed, obviously. Does it make them non-white?

That judge should be in jail herself for letting that criminal roam free after having so many issues. When you remove yourself from right vs left thing, you see a clearer picture of the real problem. She in fact was a white woman murdered by a black man, the story was trying to be covered up for a couple weeks by liberal media, now that’s messed up. “White privilege” is a statistical phenomenon, applicable to entire populations. Applying it to specific individuals is nonsense from the get go, no matter whether an Ukrainian or a British or an American.

I have discovered this most curious new research in race science, that says that Slavic people are actually just as white as us white Aryans, and we should all be comrades in the coming race war, what do you other fellow Aryans think?” followed by the usual replies that you’d expect, “Yes, I too have recently learned of this amazing new race science research, who knew that the Russian master race is actually on the same side as the Aryan master race?”
Sites that embraced this “new thinking” got lots of membership and donations. Sites that resisted withered away. And it was, completely by coincidence I’m sure, all around the same time that Putin had consolidated power and taken over the Russian political system.
So here is Russia and Russian-backed tools, stirring the pot again.

From a Ukrainian and more universal perspective, I think labels like *“white men”* and *“white supremacist violence”* still end up lumping billions of people together by skin color and gender — it’s the same mechanism of discrimination. It’s still hate speech, just repackaged as “social justice.”
This kind of rhetoric can be dangerous, because our experiences (like Iryna’s murder) also get reduced to a “white” label and instrumentalized for certain U.S. identity battles.
Sure, the article is strong and persuasive, and it will probably work well as a weapon in America’s internal culture wars. But for Ukraine, I fear it carries the risk of instrumentalization and distortion of our own history and reality.

Americans are obsessed with races and labeling people. Every time I fill out a job application I need to participate in a survey and pick my ethnicity, which they call either white or Caucasian 🙄Neither of these two make sense. Ukrainians in particular, and Slavs in general, are not considered white as a socio-economic construct, but they are considered white from ethnicity point of view (which let me repeat is such a BS). People in the US took more culturally from for example Mexicans than from Slavs, yet they distinguish Latinos, but not Slavs. And don’t let me get started about Caucasians being a quite distinctive ethnicity group. Make it make sense please.
Long story short, Ukrainian Slavic immigrants are not white in the US, but also white.
