Awful and now news like this will further incentivise these criminals.

I had my bike nicked from a station storage and just got the copy/paste response saying as it had been parked for more than a couple of hours no further investigation would be conducted. This was about 4 months ago.

I’d imagine most people parking their bikes at a train station would be leaving it for the whole day not just under 2hrs.

The station is full of CCTV as well.

      >

      >The BTP said: “The more time our officers spend reviewing CCTV… the less time they have available for patrolling railway stations and trains, investigating crimes which cause the most harm.”

To say that with a straight face must take some doing!

      >The British Transport Police (BTP) says it will not investigate bike thefts outside stations where the bicycle has been left for more than two hours.

So… basically every single person who’s ever rode a bike to a station?

Who on earth is gone for less than 2 hours?

      >”The more time our officers spend reviewing CCTV… the less time they have available for patrolling railway stations and trains, investigating crimes which cause the most harm.”

      Like…. THEFT?!

      >Car thefts will not be investigated if the vehicle has been left for more than two hours, while any bikes stolen worth less than £200 will also not be investigated.

Do we actually need transport officers?

Not just at stations. One of my neighbours’ kids had their bike stolen from outside their property. I sent the police my doorbell footage of it happening with the persons face in clear view. Closed due to lack of evidence.

This is essentially legitimising and giving a pass to those who make their money by stealing whilst simultaneously telling those who use their bikes to aid in their commute that their hard earned money doesn’t mean anything because their property can be stolen.

      And that is absolutely disgusting.

We need police forces, local authorities and our government to really crack down on crime. We’re letting lawlessness win.

Look at Dubai. Might not be the best example and I’m not saying that we should fully copy them because in custody, there are arguably a lot of human rights abuses. But Emeratis are scared of the law. They know that if they break it, it will come down heavily on them and they will be punished properly.

We need something similar but more humane here.

It’s ’decriminalised’ because enforcement and conviction is virtually impossible.

Enforcement is impossible these days because there are no BTP (or even ordinary police) anywhere near most stations. The nearest BTP to my local station are an hour away, so a fat lot of use even if they were watching the CCTV.

As for conviction from the CCTV, well good luck getting a jury to convict someone where the video evidence showed a masked up individual dressed in black cutting the locks off. And even if they are stopped with your bike later then they ‘bought it for cash from someone down the pub whose name they don’t know’.

This is just insane. As someone that gets around exclusively by bike and train this is infuriating. A free pass to those who want to rob bikes. The UK has got to be one of the worst countries for cyclists.

Add it to the list. Shoplifting, drug dealing, antisocial behaviour, most car crime, phone theft.

I pay about 200quid a year for police out of my council tax. I’d honestly pay double this to just have a decent level of policing and a much lower tolerance to “petty” crime that actually has a huge effect on the victims. If you rely on your bike to get to work you could lose your livelihood over this.

I wonder how the police would typically review a long CCTV tape. If you use the principle of a ‘binary sort’ you can very quicky narrow down a time window for when the crime happens. If you have a 10 hour time window skip to 5 hours within the window – is the bike still there? Yes, skip to 7.5 hours. Is the bike still there? No, skip to 6.25 hours and so on. You don’t need to review moving footage until you’ve got a frame with a suspect fiddling with the bike. You could do this manually or make the process even faster and more foolproof with a dedicated software tool. If a good image of a suspects face exists in the footage it wouldn’t take long to find it.

Of course the police aren’t our best and brightest. They probably just watch the whole video on fast forward which is why they’ve decided on such a pathetic time window to give up on policing outside of.

    10. That’s how they manipulate crime statistics…. Suddenly less crime lol

If the states gives up on enforcing laws the state can’t complain when some citizens try to enforce those laws themselves

    12. Somebody needs to introduce BTP to the concept of a [binary search](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_search). Start by identifying the bike on CCTV at the time it was left (probably known to the owner) and the time it was found missing (also known to the owner). Pick the time in the middle and see if the bike is there or not. Now you have halved the time window. Repeat.

Going from 10 hours to 1.25 hours (to get under the two hours they require) requires inspection of only three frame grabs at intermediate times to see if the bike was there or not. At ten seconds per check, this would take 30 seconds.

If CCTV is present and covering the necessary area then not knowing the time window of a bike going missing is not an excuse for anybody with a brain.

Sooo…lock up your bike *inside* the station, then?

    14. evenstevens280 on

Ah okay so the same applies to cars parked at the train station too?

      Right?

      RIGHT?

They’ve gone with the headline of bikes, which is important to me…

But if you read the list they also won’t investigate if you’re mugged or assaulted and can’t narrow the time down to within a 1 hour window and exact location?!

      What?
