The small village on the banks of the Dnipro River fell silent as a funeral procession passed by fields where potatoes had just been harvested.
Soldiers carrying flags led the way. Behind them walked relatives and fellow villagers, most of them over 60.
They moved slowly and silently. Some crossed themselves, others wiped their eyes with their hands.
Dmytro was 40. He had worked at a printing house.
On June 14, 2024, he was conscripted. Military representatives approached him on a street in Kyiv and took him to the enlistment office. Dmytro did not object. When he called his mother, he said: “Who, if not me?”
After completing combat training, he became an infantryman in the 42nd Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On July 15, his unit was transferred to the Pokrovsk direction. On November 16, Dmytro went missing during a combat mission near Kurakhove.
In the summer of 2025, as part of the “6,000 for 6,000” exchange of fallen soldiers between Ukraine and Russia, Dmytro’s body was returned home.
At the cemetery, his coffin was lowered into the ground as relatives and neighbors wept. A salute unit fired three shots into the sky.
Dmytro is the first soldier from the village to die in this war.
After the burial, everyone took a bus to a nearby restaurant for the repast.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to hold the line – Dmytro’s funeral was marking the 1,312th day since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
