I don’t really understand why they want to buy weapons anyways, even if it was for “deterrence” then they would still be better off giving the money to someone committed to defending them at a fair price.

That seems…unlikely in the extreme. Spain never cancelled F-35, they haven’t ordered any. If they decide they want a 5th Gen though I can’t really see any chance of them picking KAAN.

So far there has been absolutely nothing about this in any credible Spanish media.
Spain has chosen Türkiye’s Hürjet over American’s T-7 and South Korean’s T-50 because TR’s extensive customization offers.
Türkiye is planning to compete with other 5th generation programs in the same way; by allowing their customers to customize their aircrafts according to their needs, allowing them to use their own avionics, mission computers, sensors etc.
This tactic has perfectly worked and made Türkiye one of the biggest drone exporters. Many countries had to beg to the US and they were expected to meet numerous unacceptable requirements to just buy an American drone. Now, the only thing they need to do is just ask from Türkiye.
Also, having an experienced partner in aviation industry such as Spain would be quite beneficial for Türkiye. Local production in Spain would speed up the delivery process and allow Türkiye to focus on Turkish Air Force’s needs.
Why would you buy jets from a country that is negotiating to buy the f35 themselves. Clearly proves that f35 is better
