If someone irresponsible and dangerous rides a bike instead of drives, I can tell you which one I’d prefer to be hit by.

Likely because of the rise of Deliveroo/Just Eat/etc. – the structure of the apps (i.e make deliveries as quickly as possible) strongly encourages them to ride recklessly, they’re often on illegally modified e-bikes, in city centres (typically where the fast food restaurants they’re collecting from are) they’re bobbing and weaving around pedestrians in pedestrianised streets, and – not to be cruel – they’re very obviously recent arrivals and not accustomed to British traffic culture.
I actively avoid pedestrianised areas of towns now. Before COVID I never had to jump out of the way of someone on a bike. Since delivery apps “improved” our lives, it’s routine. It’s one of those things where it’s a big enough change that you clearly notice it, but it’s small enough that you feel petty complaining about it.

I think this is a symptom of people becoming more self centred and arseholish in recent years, rather than something unique to Lycra enthusiasts.

We will get the usual apologists in here but let’s do a reality check.
I cycle in London multiple times a week.
The number of people that brazenly go through red lights, go through zebra crossing at speed with people on them, put themselves and other people in danger, is virtually every third or fourth cyclist I see. At times I am literally the only person waiting at the light.
Saying “well road users cause accidents too” is irrelevant. You are breaking the law, you are endangering other people. Take some goddamned accountability you utter cretins.

Curious on how many of these are caused by Deliveroo/UberEats riders. In Cardiff they race around (including on pedestrianised streets) wearing dark clothes with no lights, not using bells and often running red lights and zebra crossings.
By far the worst cyclists I’ve ever seen.

I don’t want to give any credence to the quality of the idiot delivery riders et al on basically unregistered motorbikes, but as a cycle commuter whose stops at lights pedestrians really really need to be more aware of their surroundings and not zombies on a phone.
These days we all need to be super aware at all times of everything, it’s a sad state of affairs but it’s where we are……

As pedestrian I’ve felt in danger from cyclists more often than I have from drivers, even when crossing the road.
My local council spent £££ on a new dedicated traffic-separated cycle lane, it has cycle traffic lights on it to stop cyclists so that when pedestrians get the green man they can safely cross the road and the cycle lane. Don’t think I’ve seen a single cyclist stop for those lights they just breeze on through them, the only time they ever stop is when forced to by the volume of pedestrians, otherwise they’ll try and weave their way in between pedestrians.
In reported road collisions in Great Britain in 2024 there were an estimated:
* 1,633 fatalities, an increase of 1% compared to 2023
* 29,537 killed or seriously injured (KSI) casualties, little change compared to 2023
* 128,375 casualties of all severities, a decline of 3% compared to 2023

orders of magnitude more. this is small potatoes.
Cyclists just fly along, ignore any rules of the road and pay 0 attention to pedestrians.
No surprising
