I’m an EU settled citizen and not felt like I’ve been discriminated against so far, but will say that sometimes talking to people many don’t quite understand our status or rights.

But it’s also worth mentioning that this status and our rights are reciprocal — they apply to EU nationals living in the UK pre-Brexit *and* to British nationals living in EU territory pre-Brexit.

All swings and roundabouts. I moved to Bulgaria when we were all still EU friends (I’m Irish dual citizen so still EU anyway) and there was a lot of fuckery with the government services, Healthcare and even banking. The biggest surprise was Mtel telling me they can’t sell foreigners a Sim card. Even though I had my resident ID card.

Unicredit bulbank were the same. 2 branches flat out said “no foreigners” then the whole “no speak English” thing even though my Bulgarian gf (now wife) was literally talking to them in Bulgarian.

I took it bad and tried to report it to the EU commission. They told me I had to go through the local complaints process first with the bank and Bulgarian bank regulator, only then could I submit a complaint to them in Brussels.

So of I trot in person (because of course that’s the only way) only to be told I need to present my лична карта (national ID card) to continue. I give them my long term resident ID card and they decline saying no it has to be a national ID card. Which is bollocks of course.

So, back to the EU regulator who just repeat “you need to follow the local complaints procedure first” completely disregarding that the local regulator was declining to engage with me.

As someone who spends a good deal of time in China, most of this sounds like “everyday life” over there!
