It’s not like Democracy in Europe is in good shape either…

FWIW I wasn’t talking about EU governing bodies like other people are trying to spin in the comments.

    2. I was expecting the ufo invasion as the next catastrophical event, but oh well…

As a rule of thumb, Europe, as much as I love it, is never ready for anything.

      > Authoritarians to the left of me,
      > dictators to the right,
      > Here I am,
      > Stuck in Europe with you 🎵

This is an existential moment. We the EU need to find our cojones, re-arm fast, and break free from America before they dump us. That means major sacrifice in social spending to pay for it. The price of freedom.

America is no longer our ally. Even Merz said do. We are alone. We need to fess up to it.

America don’t have democracy right now, if the watchdogs haven’t moved them down from Flawed already, they haven’t done their job.

LMAO, “might not survive” = Magical thinking

The USA isn’t coming back, it elected the worst possible person at the worst possible time. And there is plenty of blame to go around. After four years of standing about doing nothing under Biden; Schumer and Jefferies now refuse to endorse a popular Dem against a sex offender in New York because they take their orders from AIPAC.

This is a real case of “you get what you deserve”.

so according to The Guardian, if the 2028 elections don’t happen, maybe even the United States won’t be ready.

If anything underlying rot has been brought to light. In a way I am glad for Trump. Somebody like him was inevitable sooner or later and his “grab by the pussy” style makes it impossible to pretend that it is still business as usual. Better now than in 20 years from now when 100% of all IT/data processing has been handed to US companies.

Isn’t Europe as a whole going in the same direction? With the rise of far right politicians pretty much everywhere?

    11. Betonkauwer on

Best part will be the stuck up liberals who love democracy so much they wont even vote for it coming to Europe to tell us how horrible we are.

Take everything The Guardian says with a pinch of salt, they’re the ones who had to leave platforms because of community notes.

No, of course it isn’t. Because what you would need to do in preparation for a complete deterioration in economic and political relations with the US is the exact same thing as what you would be preparing for. We would have to isolate ourselves from the US. Why would we do that in anticipation of the being isolated from the US? It’s like the idea that it preferable to harm yourself rather than be harmed in the future. We certainly need to be more self-sufficient and self-focused, but we don’t need to recklessly pursue that independence in a way that pre-emptively harms ourselves based on a hypothetical future harm.

    14. So we go back to the age of kings and queens?

Not sure if I want our king to actually be ruling the country. But he’ll at least be quicker to decide than this mess.

    15. JagBak73 on

The U.S. is pretty much a hybrid regime at this point and Europe is not prepared. Many European nations are still behaving like vassal states, kowtowing to the mad orange despot.

    16. ukrokit2 on

Europe should’ve been ready for a Trump presidency and yet it was caught with it’s pants down once again

    17. someoldguyon_reddit on

It’s not just America. With the sheer amount of weapons of mass destruction The US has the whole world may not survive.

    18. Steezy_Six on

European politicians roll out the red carpet for Trump.

European media, which has long criticised the anti democratic nature of regimes around the world, have lost their voice and are silent about what’s happening in the US.

The only reason Europe pushed for liberal democracy in the post war era and post Cold War era was because of the US, and it will disappear just as fast without the US.

Unfortunately American democracy is thriving. This is what Americans voted for. This is what americans want.

    20. TheoryOfDevolution on

Why is the American democracy our business? It’s not like we don’t have neo-fascism in Europe or something.

    21. Adorable-Database187 on

We are working on it, it takes a little work to decouple 75 years of strategic partnership and trade relations.
Not to mention the decency on US services.

    22. creative_tech_ai on

All Europe needs to do to understand how a liberal society with
      1) strong unions,
      2) strong public healthcare,
      3) and a leash around the neck of the 1% that want to enslave the rest of us

turns into a copy of cutthroat American capitalism is to look to the UK. I hate to say that, but starting with Margaret Thatcher in the 80s, the UK has been steadily dismantling all of the institutions that ensured a fair society. Privatization of public works, defending the NHS, attacking migrants…it’s textbook. And look at the state of the UK now. They left the EU and have only suffered for it. This is what Trump, Putin, and Xi Jingping want for the EU. They fear it and aren’t going to stop trying to tear apart the unity we have by stoking fear, racism, and restrictions of freedoms. We really need to stand together against this if we hope to have any chance to hang onto this wonderful, albeit imperfect, union we enjoy.

      >Democracy is when the left wins. And the death of democracy is when the political party I do not like wins.

      Retards.
