Can’t cut the 50%+ central government mandated spend and everything else has been cut to the bone. Maybe some councils have a bit extra because council tax is a disastrously unbalanced tax, but largely most councils do not.

Ah yes, just what I needed, more tax on my £1200pcm studio apartment half the size of the average hotel room.

Maybe it’ll go towards my front road that’s basically cobblestone, the buses that keep getting contracted to the ever incomplete stagecoach, actual bin collections, or reopening our town’s closed recreational centre.

      One can dream.

      InB4 it’s the fault of immigrants/Muslims/the woke/lefties/lawyers/Labour etc etc.

These amateurs always assume there is some huge pile of “obviously wasted” funds that they can just effortlessly cut and then absorb praise for so doing.

What do they think the previous generations of budget hawks spent their time doing? Twiddling their thumbs?

Love how they came charging into Lancashire Council ready to DOGE the heck out of it and now it’s coming up time to set next year’s budget, are heartily backtracking and have stated:

“The government is asking local government to do ever more and not giving them the resources to do it.”

YOU MEAN LIKE EVERY COUNCIL HAS BEEN SAYING FOR 15 YEARS NOW? IT WAS TRUE?

      Colour me surprised

    7. Everyone said before the local elections that statutory requirements meant there wasn’t much to cut for councils. Reform thought they knew better

Oh Kent electorate, what’s that, the consequences of your own actions?

On the plus side, hopefully this’ll inoculate them from supporting Reform in the next GE.
