Gardai are investigating efforts by a Chinese spy agency to influence and recruit Irish politicians. The inquiry is examining interactions between an alleged Chinese spy working for the United Front, a key arm of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) charged with cultivating influence in the West, and at least two politicians.

The government has been briefed on the inquiry because of its national security, political and economic implications. Last week detectives carried out a series of actions in connection with the inquiry at multiple locations, which are not being disclosed for security reasons. Garda Headquarters declined to comment.

The United Front has previously targeted figures such as Prince Andrew in what British officials described as “elite capture” operations — a tactic used by Beijing to extend its reach abroad. President Xi has described the UF as China’s “magic weapon” for advancing its interests overseas.

It represents the first known case of Chinese meddling in Irish political affairs, but comes as Ireland prepares to host the EU presidency from July, when it will assume responsibility for chairing meetings of the European Council and steering the EU legislative and policy agenda. Among the most pressing issues are Beijing’s support for Russia’s war against Ukraine, trade tariffs, human rights violations and Taiwan.

The identity of the agent cannot be disclosed for legal reasons but he appears to have come to Ireland initially to study before beginning to cultivate contacts in politics and business — a pattern of activity commonly employed by Chinese spies and agents of influence.

    2. Does anyone know if Catherine Connolly has hired any new staff lately?

    3. Finally!

After the Russians apparently think Ireland is not important enough to be spied upon – unlike Austria or Switzerland – a big country who thinks we are worthy of their time and attention.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Russians and Chinese are funding Catherine Connolly and some of the far-left anti-west MEP’s in parliament like Luke Ming.

Wouldn’t be hard I’d say. All it’d take is for the supposed spy to cosy up to a minister in the pub and they’d probably take said spy in on a day pass for the soundness of it

Well at least it proves we’re not racists. The Chinese community of Craggy Island should stop their whinging.

    7. We should be looking out for Chinese, Russia, American, British and Israeli trying to influence. We always hear about Russian and Chinese but never about western or Middle East countries.
