Bullshit. Anything that happens outside Ireland’s borders is none of its concern.
Ukraine falls? Don’t care.
Poland falls? Don’t care.
Baltics fall? Also, don’t care.

EDIT: to be clear, I think Ireland should invest more in its military, but the artificially high GDP isn’t why.

So say Ireland increases its defence spending, and a couple of years from now when people are used to the defence spending increase and cuts need to be made elsewhere, where do you think they’ll be taken from? Tax the wealthy? Cut public services?
>Brochet and Orchard **noted that public support for rearmament in Europe can’t be taken for granted, especially when it implies trading social security for defense security**, when there is no perception of imminent danger.
>“**It could trigger a massive and potentially radical rejection of the rearmament drive in European countries, especially if they are distant from the European border**,” they said. “Future elections in Europe are likely to test the resolve of the voting populations, with a risk of backtracking on the plan should regime change ensue.”
We also don’t have our own defence industry so most money invested is gone out of the country, Others will tell you of other neutral nations, but they hardly mention that they have a defence industry of their own and money gets re-invested
>“**Local players disproportionately benefit from the strength in defense spending, as countries aim at reinvesting what is effectively their taxpayer money into their domestic economies**,” Brochet and Orchard wrote, adding that has been particularly visible in Germany and Eastern Europe.
When it comes to the cables, they are owned by private corporations, Will the Irish government be reimbursed? Not a chance! What is this? Socialism for corporations? I thought they want less government interference in their businesses?
>**Ireland has faced scrutiny from security and defense analysts for its relatively low levels of military and defense spending.** Despite the current government’s record-high defense budget of €1.35 billion ($1.48 billion) with a stated goal of increasing defense spending to €1.5 billion ($1.74 billion) by 2028, this still only accounts for 0.25 percent of Ireland’s gross domestic product (GDP). Ireland spends the least on defense out of any country in the European Union, despite having the second-highest GDP per capita in the bloc—its defense spending is only half that of fellow neutral state Malta, a country with about a tenth the population of Ireland. At the 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague, other European countries committed to spending 5 percent of their GDP on defense, further widening the gap between Ireland and its NATO-member neighbors when it comes to defense spending.
Of course, the defence lobbyists are unhappy that Ireland isn’t putting the money into the Military industrial complex’s shareholders back pockets
They also use the fake GDP statics, Can you image how much Ireland would have to pay for 5% of its GDP?

Ireland doesn’t need to join NATO.
We just need to adequately fund the DF to the point that we aren’t just freeloading off other countries for basic security requirements like policing our waters and airspace. I don’t see anyone out there seriously suggesting we join NATO yet it’s always used as a boogeyman by the neutrality crowd.
I’m certain our partners in Europe would be thrilled if we stop being a weak link in the overall European security regime and they could then shift focus to more pressing areas.

I dunno how people can speak out against the horrible shit Israel is doing to Palestinian civilians but when it comes to Ukraine – a fellow European country literally fighting for its independence against an aggressive imperialist state – they couldn’t give a fuck.
Neutrality is definitely a worthy endeavour but it seems too many people are happy enough that it’s at the expense of our allies and neighbours in the East who don’t have this luxury.
What if in some alt reality the UK got some fascist headcase who decided since everyone in Ireland speaks English, and it had been a part of the Empire for hundreds of years, it should be British again and invaded.
You’d like to think our European neighbours would give a fuck and help the island out in some way. The irony would be the Ukrainians would probably be the first to lend its support.

They also do side gigs as Fossil Fuel industry attack dogs.
Throw this article in the bin where it belongs.

I always find these threads hilarious, Nato would never take us, our gear is shit and we spend the lowest amount of money in Europe on our Army
Youd swear people thought Nato are foaming at the mouth to accept 6000 under funded troops with no air capabilities, limited sea capabilities and an Army with a severe retention/brain drain issue

Regardless of whether or not we should join NATO, the state of our defence forces is embarrassing. In this day and age, to have such a weak defence force is ridiculous. Literally no defence from anything, especially cyber attacks.

Do Irish people really have an interest in joining an American military alliance? I see these articles but I’ve never met anyone who wants this, most people are much more concerned about housing and cost of living.

Ireland doesn’t need to join NATO and NATO doesn’t need (or probably want) Ireland. However if Ireland is to protect the undersea cable infra then we will need in the short term some degree of defence cooperation probably under a EU PESCO umbrella. Until such a time as Ireland can do this independently.
What Ireland does need is effective and targeted defence capabilities in specific key areas like maritime surveillance, air interdiction, and cyber protection. However it seems like any time we try to maturely discuss our defence strategy it descends into a debate about neutrality. However to pretend otherwise, as the front runner in our presidential race thinks, is shortsighted.
Ireland doesn’t need aircraft carriers or hundreds of main battle tanks. Arguably it does need fast air jets for interdiction purposes however a state of the art radar system giving a recognised common air picture that feeds into an RAF/UK response force could alleviate that.

I’m for a Irish air force, drones, Cybersecurity, more soldiers and read defence force that’s professional and can defend this country most people agree we shouldn’t free load off the RAF
But I’m sure as hell we don’t need to join NATO we don’t need to be dragged into wars and conflicts
We as members of the EU and UN do our part as we did with Ukraine refugees

We have to rethink neutrality. Reading here and else where most folks seem to think that being neutral means not joining NATO. We lived that. way because we had actual no natural predators in our neighbourhood. The Russians had to come through Germany, France and the UK to get to us. But that’s old world stuff now. The dangers to our security and way of life is not coming from a Russian invasion but through far more devious and subtle methods. Air incursions. Threats to undersea cables. Interference in our civic processes. We’re prepared for none of these. This is the conflict of the future. Once lads start yakking about NATO you can be sure they’re living in the past.

Couple of arms factories, couple more contracts, couple more houses in South Dublin for their mates… who cares if we are dragged into wars and get swallowed by the American Empire, doesn’t matter so long as the right people cash in.
