Some people are entitled arseholes who believe that their “proper” job allows them to treat the generally younger people serving them in shops like dog shit.
If everyone had to do a stint working in retail we’d have a lot less of this.

Could have easily said 86% and everyone would agree

Honestly, I’m surprised it’s that low. I have so many stories from working retail, and few of them are good. Especially around peak periods like Christmas, school events, sales, etc. I don’t think I knew a person working retail at that time that *didn’t* suffer anything from minor verbal chiding to physical threats. I remember a guy trying to break down our door 30 minutes after close to return an item for refund, and then threatening to torch every car in the outside the store if we didn’t let him in, over an item worth less than 20 quid. I also remember a woman threatening to sue the cashier personally because we were out of stock of something.

I once had a person curse me out of it, saying the ATM in the shop swallowed her card. It’s impossible with the ones you see in the shops. Went on for 15mins before we (a manager was called) to check her wallet… and there it was! No so much as a sorry, turned and walked off. People can be absolutely awful!

And 90%+ of managers just let it happen, no consequences at all for the abusive customer.

Dublin especially has lost its politeness and charm… I think everyone is in a bad mood so everyone is rude to each other. Lots of other places I’ve been people aren’t half as cold and rude.

I was in retail before and noticed a big change after the recession. I’d say its worse after covid and with cost of living. Did have a rant at a fast food chain manager. Constantly forgetting parts of order, so had enough and complained. I find some businesses have gotten worse though. Only go there now for my kids

I worked a lot in retail, I can’t say I have been abused that much. I find it’s the younger girls that get the brunt of it and mostly from middle aged women.
Middle aged women are pretty much the backbone of all your trouble in work in retail.

I worked in retail for about a decade on and off, in Dublin city centre for half of those. I, personally, ruined 6 Christmases apparently.
I had a lad waiting outside my shop for hours to stab me, I’ve had things thrown at me, been called less than scum, a “parasite leaching off hard working people”, and a few other choice things besides.
You can usually tell who has worked in services before and who hasn’t, because those that have generally tend to be much nicer to deal with, and I would always bend over backwards to help someone who was nice.

I get my fair share of abuse for a male(25/26 years in retail, 10 in bookmakers) but the level of abuse women take is absolutely off the scale, especially in bookies. Middle aged men being late for a bet or a price results in horrible abuse thrown at young women as its fully their fault. I’ve lost count the amount of times my staff have had to take time off due to mental health issues because of the level of abuse, not to mention the revolving door nowadays with staff understandably leaving for another job elsewhere.Ive had many staff left in tears while working.Wouldn’t recommend doing that job to any college level students or young women. Worst part is that the employer fully expects us to just take it on the chin and get on with it.

This is a relatively new phenomenon. 30 years ago when I worked retail and bar jobs in my younger years this was virtually unheard of.
