    1. Somehow don’t get the impression from this that he’s moving to a better paid job somewhere else…

He can be a competent presenter, but he can’t run a desk at all; and his shows had long since descended in to parodies of themselves – the TodayFM running, porridge, crying trucker era became death and death and more death on RTÉ.

If the DAB+ trial becomes permanent, could do a job on a much more music based show on GHR maybe, but it won’t have RTÉ money.

Time must be going slower than usual – The Den feels a lot longer than 11 years ago!

Theyre still advertising his show on the radio. Very sudden announcement all the same after being one of the top dogs for so long.
Wonder if he’s sick or something

He said “we are back tomorrow” at the end of yesterday’s show.

Then – he’s not there today and the show is cancelled in the afternoon.

There’s more to this than meets the eye

Its an odd one. When you consider Claire Byrne is still on air and in a few weeks is moving to take over the Pat Kenny slot on Newstalk in the exact same slot that she is in now it’s clear the days of instant dismissal for disloyality are gone in RTE. So for Darcy to get shown the door with immediate effect means there is something bigger going on.

“Ray D’Arcy ‘hugely’ disappointed with RTÉ management as he leaves in shock move” – interesting update from the Journal

    8. PRESENTER RAY D’ARCY has said that he is “hugely” disappointed with RTÉ management and how his departure from Radio 1 has been “handled”.

RTÉ today announced that Ray D’Arcy will be leaving RTÉ Radio after over a decade with the station.

      In a statement, D’Arcy said:

“First off, I am hugely disappointed with RTÉ management and how my departure from Radio 1 has been handled.

“I’ve been with Radio 1 for the past 11 years. In that time I have worked with some brilliant people. I want to thank them. I also want to thank all the regulars on the show, the guests and the wonderful loyal listeners.”

He added that he is particularly proud of how his show “championed” the stories and causes of people like Catherine Corless, Erica Fleming, Katriona O’Sullivan and the late Vicky Phelan.

D’Arcy said that he will continue to work in the area of raising awareness of mental health and addiction issues.

“I love radio and daily radio is part of who I am. I look forward to the opportunities ahead,” he added.

I dont know how radio contracts work but if he got no notice of termination then there has to be more to it for RTE to be able to legally end his contract.

They’re all delighted there’s no leaving party.  Porridge after a 5k run soundtracked by Hot Chip or Florence & The Machine.

I only put him on the other week (never listen to him, or any RTE radio for that matter) and I was honestly aghast at how absolutely awful he was. He just named several Van Morrison songs, as they played for a few seconds – then made remarks about the weather being a bit colder now. Daytime radio is daytime radio – but he’s being paid hundreds of thousands for *that*? (well, not now it seems..)

There’s an incredibly fortunate class of people in this country and their fortune is not at all buttressed by hard work or talent (and they all seem to gravitate to / be nurtured by RTE).

There’s definitely more to this. Anyone got the tea?

Ray is disappointed with RTE. He’s not alone there. He must have been doing an Eamon Ryan the past 11 years.

Thank god. He is likely the worst broadcaster on Irish radio. I cannot understand how anyone can listen to him. He is incapable of speaking fluently. He repeats every second phrase. It is non-stop malaprop. And it is utterly redundant tripe on top of this. I can accept that daytime radio is bland, smooth-brained fodder…but if someone is being paid hundreds of thousands per year to present, they should be capable of talking in a coherent and engaging way

    15. misterboyle on

Well he left Today FM a very similar way if memory recalls

    16. Man has been bitter and moaning on the radio for a while now. Time to move on.

    17. misterboyle on

      2016 – 2019 he was earning €450,000 going down to €250,000 in 2022

      Absolute madness
