Unrelated to Russia. Jihadist terrorism suspected. Active terror cell.
The alleged terrorist cell that was broken up by the federal public prosecutor’s office on Thursday is believed to have been targeting Prime Minister Bart De Wever (N-VA). During a search in Deurne, close to the Prime Minister’s private residence, a homemade explosive device was found.
Several sources confirm that the Prime Minister was the target of a terrorist cell with radical Islamic leanings. The suspects allegedly planned to attack using a drone to which they would attach an explosive device. According to our information, a homemade explosive device designed to be attached to a drone was indeed found during the search of the property on Sint-Rochusstraat.
The house in Sint-Rochusstraat in Deurne-Zuid is only a few hundred metres away from Bart De Wever’s private residence. Whether the suspects deliberately sought out a property in the neighbourhood will have to be determined by the investigation.
Detectives from the terrorism department of FGP Antwerp raided three other locations in Antwerp this morning, in addition to Sint-Rochusstraat in Deurne. It is not yet clear how many suspects were arrested.
Interesting, this is as far as I know – and excluding terrorist Russia – the first time I hear of terorrists trying to use a drone to execute someone.
The Ukraine invasion and now this mark the start of a new and dark chapter where we’re gonna have kamikaze drones flying into crowds and assasinating leaders all over Europe. Our anti-air capabilities can’t keep up with the threat because of how cheap, small and easily smuggled drones are. It’s really scary, and I feel so bad for the Ukrainans who have had the first taste of it.
Russia and other terrorist groups need to be put between a rock and a hard place, strongly worded letters and meetings aren’t gonna cut it.
It was only a matter of time. It is just too easy and effective. A stadium with people will be a target eventually. Established terrorist groups all have the capability to do this now.
