No true Fianna Fáiller would do such a thing. He’ll never make it in the landlording business being that soft.

With no interest. He’s stingy in doing the right thing as well.

Honestly, it would be brave to put yourself forward in a popularity contest in Ireland even if you were a non-corrupt landlord. Putting yourself forward when you actually are corrupt is just mad.

Are we supposed to celebrate that a landlord did what they were supposed to in the first place?

€3300 from 2010 inflation adjusted to 2025 should be something like €4600.

Christ eyes getting a bit tired. Read that as Jim Gavin raped his former tenant

    7. PoppedCork on

He denied the repayment for 16 years and only give the principal back, he has no honour

    8. I just hope the tenant enjoys getting that cheque.

It’s long overdue, it won’t compensate for the trouble it caused you and your family and it might not be that much in the grand scheme of your own finances now.

Tonight buy a big filthy Chinese – including starters!  – and put the rest away for a lovely surprise holiday.

Oh, and also sleep well knowing you did your civic duty to the betterment of us all.

Inflation adjusted that should be 5k by now. I would demand payment in gold.

    10. The tenant got his 3,300 back and ended any political hope this man had, I’d be over the moon if I was him

LoL , I was only thinking of my worst landlord the other day after this story broke.
Was when I was a bit less fortunate and I was on HAP and the landlord decided to make up his own numbers of what I should pay.
130 a week on top of 50 to the council as a hap payment I also happened to have lost my job around the same time so was paying it out from job seekers.
All in I think he was getting 1400 a month between me and the hap payment the rent without hap was 700 euro.
Anyway I reported this fella to the hap placement officer and his words were ” you’re a smart man figure it out for yourself”.
Eventually it all got on top of me and I ended up having a severe mental breakdown trying to o.d twice and Slept rough for nearly 9 months.
And to top it all off the head social worker in the county council (not Dublin) decided that I was Dublin’s problem and Dublin decided I was the other council’s problem so neither would provide homeless accomodation.
I hope my landlord runs for fucking president

So he didn’t account for inflation? Cheap bastard.

3300 in 2009 is over 4500 in today’s money, when will he pay the rest?

    14. ScenicRavine on

Mad they didn’t just give him 15k before the presidential race to make this go away before it became a problem. Even madder he didn’t just, you know.. pay the money back when the error was found?

    15. StickAdventurous8237 on

It’s such a small amount of money to the party considering what they would have got in return.

I don’t understand why they didn’t just pay the tenant sooner to make this all go away.

Wheres the apology and the interest?

€3,300 that long ago had an awful lot more buying power than it does today.

Though the real value here is that Jim Gavin will enjoy this reputation til the day he dies.

One mans rent is another mans presidential campaign.

    19. Ok_Magazine_3383 on

If I got to be the person who denied my landlord the opportunity to be President, and the cost was waiting 16 years to get back the €3k I’d paid him, I would have taken that deal for about 75% of the landlords I’ve had in my life.

    20. Garlic-Cheese-Chips on

The tenant can have a nice holiday off that and sip a cold one knowing he played this beautifully.
