    1. Er, isn’t that just another way to say company pays staff using profits? Gambling companies make money when you loose money, Not seeing an issue here??

Yes they do. Not sure why this is shocking or news. Some of these fobt places rake in insane money.

I used to work for a HBO and many of them were solely open for the fobt machines. Furthermore, they used to offer training to managers on how to increase engagement and keep customers longer from simple stuff like offering hot drinks to how the front screen looks and where it’s placed in relation to windows and doors…which I guess would lead to inevitable losses.

      > For venue managers at Merkur, the majority of the bonus – worth up to 80% of annual salary – is linked to “controllable profit”, according to one internal document setting out the scheme’s structure.

      > This measure is partly determined by outgoings on wages and smaller items designed to keep customers playing, such as complimentary food, drinks and “cash giveaways”.

Grimmest shops on the high street.

      >Lawyers for the company pointed out that a portion of the controllable profit bonus, equivalent to 20% of salary, can be lost if shops fail to hit performance targets, which include completing safer gambling training.

      >The bonus also includes a separate element – worth up to 20% of salary – based on reaching “compliance and audit” targets. These are understood to include a “safer gambling” element involving bosses asking junior staff about their interactions with customers.

      >Lawyers for the company said extra safer gambling elements had been added to the bonus scheme in January 2025 and had resulted in more interactions with customers.

Okay so they can complete the training, interact with customers then ignore everything and max out on their bonus.

How is that helping? They still have the bonus incentive to increase the revenue.

      Im quoted in this article.

For anyone who thinks this isn’t an issue- this bonus structure is directly at odds with their licencing conditions and code of practice.

For anyone with an interest- s3.1.4 details their safer gambling obligations. 5.1.6 explains that they cant have incentives that exploit problem gambling.

They would have supplied the regulator with a detailed breakdown of this incentive scheme, meaning the regulator is complicit in them breaking the rules.

This is corruption, quite frankly. The regulator has no interest in regulating them, and DCMS think we should have more of these slot farms on the high street. As long as the treasury gets its cut, nothing else matters.

Because they only make money when people lose. That’s kinda the point. You can’t say gambling is ok then be dismayed when people do it.

So i have a little experience in this.

I use to work for a high street amusement (they like to call themselves a casino).

The bonus structure was based on profit and profit is the money people lose.

When i worked there i would get a monthly bonus (even though i was paid weekly) and it would normally pay around £300 which was average for where i worked.

The highest it ever got was £500 and that was after the main manager was off for a month due to illness and the less trust worthy assistant manger was in charge.

Anywho after working there for a bit i truly believe these place shouldn’t exist or be massively reduced or even better brought under government control as some form of public run entity.

Then at least there is a better chance of actual help for the people that cant stop.

Really trying hard to make that look far worse than it is.

Literally just a bonus for company doing well, like a lot of other places.

Me and a mate walked into one of these places and they offered us a tenner for signing up to an email and a cup of coffee . I put the tenner in one of the machines and pretty much instantly won 150 quid , we got up and walked out and spunked it in the pub 😂

Gambling dies very little for me tbh it was my mates idea

If this isn’t already illegal then it probably should be.
