That’s really sad news. Regardless of the circumstances, his contributions to psychology and behavioral science were truly remarkable

If there are first signs of dementia and still no cure by then, I’d likely make the same choice.

Not sure if I’d need ‘assistance’, though.

It’s a right we should all have. The next fight.

Wow, truly shows how even minds enriched with knowledge & awards can struggle deeply beneath. Absolute legend in economics and psychology, his decision sheds a tragic light on mental health. Let’s remember to extend our awareness and support, no matter the success or prestige someone may appear to have. RIP, Dr. Kahneman. 💔

I find it hard to imagine the feelings one must feel in this situation, knowing that you’re living through your last days. Speaking to your loved ones for the last time. Having the chocolate dessert for the last time. Going to bed for the last time. Looking at the sky for the last time. Facing your own mortality is a strange thing.

Respect for him and his contributions to psychology. It is a shame he had to go to Switzerland though. In France, theists still have enough weight to impose their retrograd values to the rest of the population.

Oh wow, didn’t know it was suicide. He wrote my fav book.

I feel like he could have spent the rest of his life being a 24/7 podcast guest at 1,000,000 channels desperate for monetization. Pretty much what Chomsky is doing. Old age can be humiliating and the only partial cure to that is respect from society and family.

I had a conversation with him one year prior to his passing. He no longer believed in the primary ideas that got him the Nobel prize and he looked physically anguished talking about it. He valued truth above self aggrandizement. This is a rare trait for men who value legacy. His true self was very different than his harsh personal exterior. I have respect for his hidden humility.

You mean the guy who died 1.5y ago? Why is this shared as if it’s present news?

This is not sad at all.
It is a nice and comforting thought to know you are able to leave this world when you are starting to notice a decline in your cognitive and or organic functions.

My dad died at 94. Since he had turned 90, he was slowly declining.
His cognitive abilities remained intact though, but he was starting to sleep most of the day, not going out, and stopped to be curious about life.
When I was told he has passed during his sleep, my first thought was he had died at the right time. He enjoyed life and died when he was starting to withdraw.
So even if I knew I was going to miss him, I was relieved for him.

Having family members with dementia, keeping them alive is akin to torture.

My god. What a remarkable story. Imagine taking that final trip to Zurich, reflecting on the previous 90 years. Very sad and moving.

I am assuming he didn’t want to burden his family members by having to take care of him. Also a life of pain and confusion is not an easy life to live with. Psychological torture can be much worse than physical pain, and both together, intolerable.

We offer mercy to our pets but not ourselves.

He took his life into his own hands. It’s his choice, he made his decision.

When we are all born into this world, the only thing that’s certain is death. But death is not something to be feared, death is salvation, death is a warm embrace, no more suffering. Death is returning home into the eternal universe of which we came. Of course this does not apply to those who are still healthy, life is short and death is certain, so stick around and enjoy the view for as long as you can.

He understood this, he wasn’t afraid of death.

Kahneman revealed human cognitive vulnerabilities; Big Tech and marketers have used those insights in product design and advertising. The result has often been more engagement , profit and in many cases measurable societal harms like attention loss, mental-health concerns, manipulation, misinformation and privacy breaches.
