They have pretty nice romanticised versions in Bunratty castle. Bumped my head pretty hard against the low ceilings, we must have been tiny.

Walls two feet thick of earth and stone and so damp you’d need gills. Ceilings you can touch with your feet flat on the ground and anything with wheels ends up on one side of the room.
